Think
By Mona Lease

Hi, all!! Before I start this - you need to remember this is how I see this. So - the other day I had a young man call me. He wants to vote in favor of legalizing marijuana. Aside from the fact that if marijuana is legal, therefore you won't need to plant it in some unsuspecting farmer's field..here is my problem.

Why all the fuss? Why all the banter about legalization.."It's better for you than cigarettes, etc.?" Why all the drama? Then I wondered...the whole same-sex marriage argument is money driven...you get "tax rights" being married...and the right to be put on the spouse's insurance. Could marijuana legalization be the same?

In a backwards sort of way - concerning the money - could insurance companies be made to pay for your prescription? Federal Legislation demanded that all insurance companies pay for abortions - how far behind that would marijuana prescriptions be if you had a Dr. saying it is medically necessary for whatever problem you had - nervousness, stress, social anxiety, etc. It is already used for glaucoma and some cancers.

Here's what few have considered - I believe. Just like there are different alcohol contents...6%, 8%, "proofs", etc. - would our Federal Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms Department rate the marijuana? Would they put age limits on it? You know - 18 years old to buy cigarettes/18 years old to buy "pot" with a buzz time of 20 minutes? And maybe 21 years old to buy the "good stuff?" I watched a documentary on how Amsterdam handles this - thanks PBS! Whatever happens with the "voting for legal marijuana" - I do not see Ohio or any other state ever considering saying to smoke anywhere, anytime...or drive under the influence of it. Isn't that why Drs quit writing prescriptions for the narcotic pain killers, etc?

What I do not understand  is why all the jabber about it. Why don't the people who want to "indulge" just do that and be quiet? When people's homes are vandalized and prescription drugs are taken - how did the vandals knows whose house and what drugs? I've never read where anyone stole ExLax or it's prescription equivalent! Wouldn't legalizing marijuana put another "street drug" in the medicine chest for someone to steal? And, if marijuana is legalized - what part of it - cultivating, selling, possession, trafficking? If all are legalized - would you be able to plant a whole field of it like you do corn or beans? That might be a stretch - but, it is a "big money" crop.

In the end, all I see is more trouble. You can bet that if marijuana is legal it'll get taxed right along with the rest of the "sin taxing" - alcohol, cigarettes, pop, gasoline, etc. At what point will we - as a people - stop looking at the "little paper god" and start looking at each other for our hope and happiness?

Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next time. Ever Toodles!! MONA
