Those Little Kitties

By Mona Lease

Hi, all!! I normally would not think too much about this but - I've had three people speak to me about a cat problem - one died on a reader's property and two more are sick and losing weight. These are all roughly three blocks from each other - as the crow flies. I did see the kitten that died - before the death - running and jumping. And after the death - just dead...no bloody fur or marks to indicate a hit by a car, fight, etc. So I did some checking.

Ohio Revised Code 959.03 - Poisoning Animals - "No person shall maliciously, or willingly and without the owner's consent, administer poison; except a licensed vet acting in such a capacity, to a horse, mare, foal, jackmule, sheep, goats, cow, steer, bull, heifer, ass, ox, swine, dog, cat, poultry, or any other domestic animal that is the property of another; and no person shall willfully and without the consent of the owner; place any poisoned food where it may be easily found and eaten by any of such animals either on his own land or the land of another." Effective 10/01/1953

From the WebMD - Feline Leukemia - "It can not be passed to people, dogs, or other animals. It is passed through the blood, saliva, and to some extent, the urine and feces. Grooming and fighting are the most common ways to spread Feline Leukemia. Kittens can get it from the infected mother - through the milk. Infected cats have pale gums (leukemia is a blood disease), a yellow color in the mouth or whites of the eyes. They will have enlarged lymph nodes and bladder, skin, or upper respiratory infections - cough, sneeze. They will have weight loss or appetite loss and a poor coat condition. There will be a progressive weakness, lethargy, accompanied by fever, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, and reproductive problems in the infected animals. This is a virus and detected by a blood test with a follow up blood test to confirm it is Feline Leukemia and not distemper, etc.

The Humane Society is offering a Spay, Neuter, Release Program. Spaying female cats is $55 and neutering male cats is $35.To help this program be a bigger success, call the Spay, Neuter, Release Offices at 937-548-7299. You can visit alleycatalley.com for a very good video explaining all of this in more detail.

One unspayed cat, her mate, and all of their offspring, producing two litter a years, with 2.8 kittens surviving per litter, can total 12 cats in 1 year - 67 cats in 2 years - 376 cats in 3 years - 2,107 cats in 4 years - 11,801 cats in 5 years - 66,088 cats in 6 years - 370,092 cats in 7 years - 2,072,514 cats in 8 years - 11,606,077 cats in 9 years!!! Most local vets follow the advice of the Ohio Vet  Medical Association and say "Get your pet spayed or neutered.

Greenville City Ordinance Code 618.02 states - (a)"All animals shall be kept under restraint. - (b)"No owner shall fail to exercise proper care and control of his or her animal to prevent it from becoming a public nuisance."

618.04 - (b) "No person shall beat, cruelly ill treat, torment, overload, overwork, or otherwise abuse an animal or cause, instigate, or permit any dogfight, cockfight, bullfight, or other combat between animals or between animals and humans." - 618.02 (c) "A person who is the owner or has charge of any animal, shall not permit it to run at large in the public road, highway, street, lane, alley, or unenclosed land, or permit them to go upon any private yard, lot, or enclosure without the consent of the owner of the yard or enclosure."

The patrolling officers see that the dogs and cats running loosely should not be there. Until someone says something - there is nothing the officer can do. Interesting to me - Penn State College - largely law and medicine - has a motto - "Laws without morals are useless."

Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next time. Ever Toodles!! MONA
