Crowning Glory
By Mona Lease

Hi, all!! A young man called me the other day. He told me his Mom raised him. His parents were divorced. His Dad never really cared - he had always known that. He told me he had been very defiant - too defiant, actually. He said he had tested her and her boundaries. He tested her to see if she would follow through with the rules she had set...she always did. Her yes was always yes and no was always no.

He told me she took him to some bars when he was 14. She explained the "setting." She told him everything that could get him into some sort of trouble was in there - women, drugs, gambling, alcohol - it would always be there - it would always be "pretty." She said the "pretty" was part of the attraction - part of the "hook." He said she asked him if he spent all of his money chasing a girl - what would you live on until the next payday? She asked him what would happen if he spent all of his money and the girl went home with another guy? She asked what would happen if he got the girl...and a disease? She asked about the girl getting pregnant and not wanting him - just the kiddie and his money. (That happens too frequently, by the way!). He told me he was glad he was raised that way...that his Mom had prepared him well for life...that when his Dad wanted him and they hit the bars, (That happens too often, too; by the way.) he knew what to expect. He said he had told his Mom all of this. I say - "Give that Mom a crown!"

American Pharoah took the Triple Crown! That's winning the Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs, and The Belmont. That's three races in six weeks.

American Pharoah is owned by Ahmed Zayat. Reportedly he is undecided about American Pharoah running more races. Ahmed sold breeding rights while American Dream was still a Triple Crown hopeful, with the Kentucky Derby and the Churchill Downs to his credit. Ahmed retained 100% of the racing rights.

The last Triple Crown winner was in 1978. That horse was named "Affirmed."

A couple of noteworthy things here are: Victor Espinoza, the jockey of American Pharoah - is donating all of his Belmont winnings - reportedly $150,000 - to be split equally between a few select charities. Also, Ahmed retained 100% of the racing rights. Which means (I think.) that the genes may or may not produce another horse with American Pharoah's capabilities. But - Pharoah could still win a few more races, which is - more money.

It is said, in the "horse racing circles," that American Pharoah is all muscle and strength. And that makes me wonder - Is it possible (at all?) that in those same 37 years of Triple Crown winner drought - we humans might have gained some "muscle and strength" for ourselves? Ain't it about time for our "Triple Crown?" Giddy yap!!

Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next time. Ever Toodles!! MONA
