Darke County Senior Scribe
My pumpkin’s not ripe yet
By Lois Wilson

Once again Senior Scribe Poet Laureate Lois Wilson is on top of the season with her insightful look at the important events of the day.

This time it’s fall. Wilson offers four poems, each addressing a different look at the changing of the season. Some days it’s warm, some days it’s not so warm. Autumn brings red, orange and gold… and then there’s the harvest. Enjoy.

Wilson's completed set - five volumes - of published poetry is now available and is offered as a fundraiser for the Senior Scribes Scholarship Fund. Enjoy great poetry and help a local youngster attend college. For additional information, contact editor@countynewsonline.org.

THE PROMISE

In autumn's colors: red, orange, gold,
We see God's awesome worth.
We marvel at the sight so bold
Transforming all the earth.
With faith we watch His plans unfold,
And trust—spring brings rebirth.

THE LAND AWAITS

Not too long after sowing,
Field plants are green and growing.
Throughout summer’s heat and rain,
Crops can thrive producing grain.
Cool nights turn their colors gold,
Omen of the coming cold.
Farmers harvest row by row—
Leave the land to face the snow.

FRESH FROM THE PATCH

The drawings by the class hung on the wall—
Carved Jack-o-lanterns, the faces of fall.
They were colored orange, but Billy’s was not.
“Why is yours green?” the teacher asked the tot.
Puzzled, Billy paused, a little upset
Then proudly posed, “My pumpkin’s not ripe yet!”

STRETCHING A POINT

Cobwebs draped in a Halloween display.
A proud boy bragged, “My mom made them today.”
His friend who felt his own place held the plus
Claimed, “Only real spiders weave webs for us!”
