"Bad Guys"
By Mona Lease

Hi, all!! A reader asked me to expand on a point from last week's column...the one about Donald Trump saying he wanted to put Christianity back in the Government...back "on the map" (as it were)...give Christianity it's "rightful, deserved" voice. The point in question here is: I have spoken to dozens of people and no one can tell me that they have seen God - Himself - anywhere..not a sports game..not the schoolhouse..not the courthouse.

The thing here is that the time-frame people reference as being desired (and the answer to our problems) had people wiling to be the "bad guy" - willing to say this or that is wrong on the school play yard (or school period) - willing to say they know a student could do better (and took the extra time to try to achieve that..."off the clock") - willing to dole out the criticism with the praise and willing to say that really there can only be one winner and one loser...and it takes a winner to have a loser and vise-versa.

There was an understanding that just when all is going well for you...something is gonna happen to "upset your apple cart." Like - just when you sit down in front of the telly with a beer, cold just the way you love it - in comes the kiddie or the dog needs to go outside to potty - at that exact moment you've thought about for weeks (maybe the Ohio/Michigan State game). Deep breath here.

Or maybe you spent hours over a recipe and got the cake baked, cooled, iced and decorated to perfection - it looks like a creation right out of a Betty Crocker Cookbook. The kiddies and the hubby come home - and no one wants cake. Deep breath here.

Where did we ever get the idea that life would always be perfect? Where did we get the idea that all people - or any one person - would be perfect? Where did we get the idea that our school board, our Mayor, our Governor, our President - or anyone else..is perfect...all the time..  or even half of the time?

Aren't we supposed to be using our voice for our lives? If you live in a neighborhood where all of the properties are nice except one - do you ignore it - or do you see if you can help - maybe make a difference? Would it be worth our time and effort to try - we've got a stake in this - something to lose or gain.

With our "collective voice" - wasn't there a time - actually the above referenced time - when we had our "drug problem" known only as a handful of "juvenile delinquents?" Didn't our "collective voice" afford us the jail under the building next to the Courthouse (Greenville) - and said jail had a "bull pen"...one big cell that housed 6 or 8 guys. In the open area was one toilet, one sink and 6 or 8 cots - all in the open (I repeated this on purpose) - no privacy....and few people wanted to be there. (Jail was jail - not a hotel)

After taking another look at the above, I have to ask myself: Are there some things we are just supposed to assess, roll up our sleeves and fix ourselves? If it's our mess because we figured everyone deserved to "exercise their rights" - should we ask Someone else to clean it up for us? Sigh - my dog needs to potty.

Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next time. Ever Toodles!!!  MONA
