The Sparrow and the Cannabis
By Mona Lease

Hi, all!! I'd like to take this time to say "I'm sorry" - to my editors. I know you'd like my column to be submitted earlier in the week. And all the "good stuff" happens around Wednesday - or later. That being said -

Medical Marijuana is legal in Ohio as of Wednesday September 8, 2016. Here's the deal - you knew there'd be a "deal" - right?? It is not allowed to be smoked. It has to be in a patch, a vapor, or an edible (maybe like a gummy bear??). You are still not allowed to grow it at home - who saw that one coming?? This will all be supervised by The Ohio Department of Commerce, The State Medical Board, and The Board of Pharmacy.

To be eligible for the medical marijuana you must have: AIDS, ALS, Alzheimer's, cancer, chronic pain, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, Crohn's disease, epilepsy or other seizure disorder, fibromyalgia, glaucoma, hepatitis C, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, PTSD, spinal cord conditions, Tourett's syndrome, traumatic brain injury, and sickle cell anemia. This is still a hot issue.

There is no clear protection - as of now - concerning random drug screens at work...or if you test positive for cannabis when you are stopped by law enforcement in a random check. Someone else is growing the cannabis and processing it. Which means that the potency of the cannabis and the potency of what you get are likely to be two different things as potency is controlled by the above-mentioned state departments/boards. I'm guessing it will be like alcohol ...beer is 6% and really an alcohol percentage of what...4 or 4-1/2%...(which is the state's hiss about all of the craft beer being sold now. Craft beer alcohol content is much stronger by comparison.) I'm guessing there will be a medical marijuana with a content near whiskey, too. Nothing is clear-cut about monitoring the levels of the cannabis in your body the way Oxycodone is measured by a blood test. Nothing has been said yet about how a "prescription" will work - you know - one "gummy bear" 3 times a day. Or maybe like for asthma - four puffs off of a vaporizer 2 times a day. Remember - this is to "control pain" - not get you "buzzed or stoned."

My Grandmother - who lost her husband and was left with a 10 day old baby, a 6 year old and an 18 year old to raise by herself used to say: "The more you stir shit; the more it stinks." Obviously, I never knew my Grandfather from that side of my family.

Now - what I have personally seen and heard is that people want the medical marijuana because of a PTSD...post (after) traumatic stress disorder. None of these people were in a war (actually fighting) or a war situation (a hospital, motor pool, etc,). People's comments (feel free to read these yourselves on most tv stations' websites) are: "Why can't we smoke it?" These comments are a good 80% of the time.

So I have to wonder now (and have wondered all along these past 7 years or so): Do some of these people sit around and think about how bad they feel? Do they sit and think about how many times they got the brown end of the stick? (Maybe you ought to look before you reach??) And I wonder if there is some percentage of these people who want marijuana legal so their insurance company will have to pay for it. I come by this last question due to all the hype about not being allowed to smoke the legal cannabis.

This all makes me wonder about the little sparrow from last week's column. If you have a "supplier", are buying, smoking and are happy (warm and happy in your pile of crap) - should you have kept your mouth shut??

Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next time. Ever Toodles!! MONA
