Mind, Body, Soul
Getting "In Sync"
By Mona Lease

Greetings, Gals!! Guys - be advised: This is a column geared to women. We'll be looking at ourselves - who we really are - how we are put together and such. I don't care if you read this. This column delves a little deeper than most.

A lot of you gals may not enjoy your menses - that is...the period. But, if you get in the rhythm of this - it will go much more smoothly on the whole.  Remember - this column is called...Mind, Body, Soul.

This is all just basic stuff - no big words from the medical profession. Picture this as a sort of "roller coaster" ride. We gals get to bear life - from when a sperm cell and an egg cell meet and join.. all the way to giving birth to a kicking, crying baby!

The lining of the uterus is where the united egg/sperm cell is going to put down roots and call the whole place home for the next nine months. The bad part here is - the uterine lining was not meant to last forever...only some 28 days. Raw deal that this is - we gals are going to lose that lining.

And so starts the "roller coaster" ride. Through this ride - our bodies are going to play with the amount of hormones we need to complete this "ride." On the way up the hill - getting ready for the possibility of a pregnancy - your body kicks out more hormones. It takes a lot of those "little buggers" to get up the hill!

At the top of the hill - and if there is no pregnancy - your body cuts back on the hormone production. We won't need as many going down the hill. Close to the end of the hill is a mense. For you guys reading this - it's a three foot deep, ten feet long mud bog at the end of the quarter mile run.

Here's the "in sync" part. You know how your body works, gals. You know the warning signs. You know the red flags. Those menses will come whether we are ready or not. Start scheduling your life around this "ride."

Start cutting back on your salt intake a week before your scheduled mense. Salt contributes to water retention - puffy eyes...puffy feet and hands, etc. And you'll probably get a percentage of this with the mense. You can control how much you are uncomfortable and for how long.

Exercise is the key here. Walking is the best exercise. You don't have to walk a mile. Just two or three short walks a day will help. Walk to the end of the block and return.

Pay attention to caffeine. This can actually make things worse and cause a flow to be heavier than it should. Your body is cleaning out the "old" - no longer needed - no longer useable. Your urine production will increase and not to be outdone...the bowel will follow suit. This is the body.

Now, for the mind. Since your body cleaned out all of the "old" - no longer "needed" stuff...try doing this with your mind. Are there any thoughts you just can't use? Any left over feelings  - about any one or any thing...that you just don't need hanging around in your brain? Do you have any emotions lurking around  - waiting to make you have a bad day...or get "the waters riled" with someone?

The reality here is: After the mense - it's a clean slate for your body. A time of starting new. You have a whole, new fresh lining. If you can do this with your mind - you can get your mind and body "in sync." Your mind has a whole new outlook: - as it were.  If you unclutter it - you have room for productive ideas. You have room for new growth and beginnings as the potential bearer of a whole other life...known as being a woman.

If you get these two in sync - mind and body...the soul just naturally aligns itself. Rudimentary as this is worded - it works.

Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next time.  Ever Toodles!!!     MONA
