A-Tigers no problem for Ft. Recovery

ANSONIA- As a coach, there wasn’t a whole lot Ansonia coach Darrick Barga could really do. Coming into the Saturday night non-conference game with Ft. Recovery, the 2-0 Tigers were playing host to the 3-0 Indians.

Ft. Recovery junior, 6-5 Wade Gelhaus, proved to be a one man wrecking crew. Gelhaus scored 21 points, pulled down 12 rebounds, dished out two assists, blocked two shots and altered a few other shots, as the Indians ran past Ansonia 65-42.

Playing the inside game on the Tigers, the Indians were in control right from the opening tip.

“We were definitely a step slow tonight guarding the ball,” said Barga. They (FR) were able to get around us and they are a talented team. They have four returning starters and a good bench. It’s tough when you need a big man and they put four on the floor as starters and all four can handle the basketball. We won’t face many teams like this one, especially in the conference. This was a good test for us to see where we were at. This is just a very good team. They can handle the ball and shoot it.”

Down 20-10 after one, the Tigers ran into their offensive woes, scoring seven in the second and a mere two in the third. At the break, the Tribe was holding a commanding 34-17 advantage and was up 50-19 after three.

“Being held to just nine points in that 16 minute stretch was tough,” said Barga. “We had times out there where we looked good on both ends and I was very happy with the boys. There just wasn’t enough of it, Ft. Recovery is a very good team. They took a lot of shots away from us. They were switching everywhere and when a team switches like that, it makes it hard to stay with them.”

It was a night the Tigers would be able to salvage one quarter in their favor, the fourth. In the final eight minutes, Ansonia pumped in 23 points to just 15 for the Indians. The second lowest scoring quarter of the night for the Indians (14 in the second).

“If we could have put up a 10 spot in the third quarter, that would have been a big help to us because we did finish strong,” Barga stated. “We have to find ways to score against teams like this and we’ve got to be able to make plays. We get open looks, we have to be able to knock those down. We have to improve on our man defense but we never gave up. We never stopped playing.”

Tuesday, the Tigers will tangle with Russia in another non-conference contest.
