Turnovers haunt Lady Trojans

O’Donnell out with early foul trouble
Other Girls basketball... Tri-Village and Missinawa Valley post wins

ARCANUM - Coming off a second game win in the Burkett Tournament, the Arcanum Lady Trojans were looking to make it two wins in a row. National Trail had other ideas.

With sophomore Abbey O’Donnell on the bench in foul trouble most of the night, Arcanum just couldn’t seem to get it together. Couple that with 11 first quarter turnovers (29 on the night) the Trojans found themselves in a hole right from the beginning.

In the end, the Lady Blazers handed Arcanum a 64-19 Cross County Conference loss.

“I’m proud of my girls,” said Trojans coach Rachael Fearon. “They went out there and the hustled and worked hard. We have a lot of work to do but we continue to work hard in practice. That’s all we can do.”

The woes started for the Trojans early when O’Donnell was forced to sit the at the 3:27 mark of the opening frame with two personal fouls.

Trailing 13-0, Fearon put her sophomore back in and O’Donnell get the first bucket for the Trojans with 32 seconds showing on the clock.

With eight minutes in the books, the Trojans trailed 15-2.

The second quarter would get no better with O’Donnell getting her third foul at the 5:44 mark and would be forced to sit the rest of the half.

By the break, the Blazers were well in command, holding a 31-6 lead.

“We need Abbey in there to crash the boards for us,” said Fearon. “She is a big part of our offense and with her in foul trouble, we get nothing on the offensive end. Abbey is a presence in the middle for us.”

With O’Donnell out of commission, Rebecca Deniston stepped up, trying to fill the gap left by O’Donnell.

“She worked hard in there tonight and she busted her backside,” Fearon said. “She gave us all she had. She got in there, powered through. She knew what she had to do and she did it.”

During half-time, Fearon made adjustments but it just wasn’t to be. As the third quarter unfolded, O’Donnell picked up her fourth immediately, putting her back on the bench.

“We knew we had to start getting into our half court, offensive set if we were going to make a serious run at the game,” said Fearon. “So the quicker we can get the ball down the floor before the defense can get set, the better off we are. Again, with Abbey gone, that hurts because it takes us out of our flow.”

Now 1-2, the Trojans will travel to Troy today to face Troy Christian.

The Trojan junior varsity built a 26-10 lead at the half and was forced to hold on to get a 36-30 victory.

Around the county, Ft. Recovery popped Greenville 57-40, Versailles lost to New Knoxville 52-34, Ansonia went to 0-3 with a 57-29 loss to Newton. Tri-Village remained undefeated, topping Lehman Catholic 69-49 while Mississinawa Valley pounded Bethel for the Lady Hawks’ first win of the season, 63-20.
