  Union gets first ever tournament title

MODOC, Ind. - Ansonia was outscored 11-2 during a decisive third quarter Thursday and lost to the host school in the Ohio-Indiana Border Wars Basketball Tournament, 54-35.

It marks the first tourney championship of any kind at the boys’ varsity level since the 1977-78 season for the Rockets.

The Tigers, who fall to 4-5, trailed only 23-19 at halftime, but Union (7-2) limited Ansonia to only an Austin Bergman field goal in the third period. Thus, Union took a 34-21 bulge into the final frame and cruised to the 19-point triumph.

Junior standout Willie Eviston paced the winners with 25 points and senior Conner Shore added 10.

Zach Brown led Ansonia with 14 points and Bergman added 9.

Meanwhile, Union City edged Mississinawa Valley 55-47 in the consolation contest.

Junior Brandon Byers poured in 18 points for the Blackhawks (1-7) and Joey Brooks and Dane Blumenstock added 9 each.

Gary Williams led the Indians (5-4) with 17 points and Tyler Mote came off the bench to add 14.

Earlier in the day, Mississinawa Valley outscored Ansonia 36-22 in the championship contest of the junior varsity event.

Union overwhelmed Union City 44-16 in the consolation game.
