Brookville no contest for Versailles - Tigers to meet Miami East for title

By George Starks

VERSAILLES- If it had been a 12 round boxing match, it would have been called off by the fifth round. With eight minutes in the books (three rounds), Versailles held an 18-9 lead over Brookville.

By the three minute mark of the second quarter (fourth round), things were getting a little lopsided and a minute later it was officially being declared a TKO. By half-time, the TKO was a KO as the Tigers were up on Brookville, 42-16.

In the end, Versailles rolled to a convincing 67-32 victory over the Blue Devils in the second game of the inaugural night of the Versailles Holiday Tournament.

Even though the 35 point margin of victory seems impressive, the Tigers came out flat to start the second half, scoring only seven points but holding Brookville to just four points on defense.

“It’s tough coming out and playing during the holidays,” said Versailles coach Scott McEldowney. “The kids get out of the routine of going to school and sometimes, sit around a little too much. It was nice to see them come out with the energy they had and put together a really nice first half. I took a time-out early in the game because I wasn’t happy with the type of pressure we were putting on. We were too laid back behind the three point line.”

Led by 6-4 senior Mitchell Campbell with 18 points and 10 rebounds, it was the play of 6-3 freshman Kyle Ahrens, 15 points, that had the crowd buzzing.

“He does a real nice job for us,” McEldowney said. “Kyle loves basketball. He plays AAU ball all over the place and is pretty mature for his age. You can tell how much basketball he’s played at a high level. He’s pretty composed on the floor and he will continue to get better.

“It’s been nice to have Mitchell Campbell for four years,” McEldowney admitted. “He lettered as a freshman for me and now, he’s getting his basketball legs from his football legs. We need to work on his post moves but he really shows his versatility when he pops out and hits the three.”

Hopefully, we can keep this tournament going,” McEldowney said. “The fan base is good and it was nice to get that first win under our belts and get to the championship.

In the opening game, the Miami East Vikings, led by senior Gunner Shirk with 21 points, routed the Anna Rockets 60-48. The Vikings put three in double figures as senior Josh Snyder added 12 and junior forward Garrett Mitchell netted 11 in support.

Anna was led by Maverick Long with 18 points while Chandon Williams added 10 in support.

The Rockets and Blue Devils will play in the consolation game with Versailles and Miami East to follow 20 minutes after the conclusion of the consolation game.
