Greenville finishes second in Wave Invitational
Arcanum fourth overall

By George Starks

GREENVILLE- A year ago, the Greenville wrestling team finished 1-4 the annual Greenville Wrestling Invitational. This year, that number was turned around.

The 4-1 record gave Greenville a second place finish behind Celina’s 5-0 record while Arcanum would come in fourth with a 2-3 record overall.

“We are a very young team,” said Wave coach John Shutts. “Last year, we were 1-4 at the end of the day so we improved from a year ago. Coming into last year, we were 25-0 so this is a big improvement over what we did last year.

“Celina has a good squad and they are a little more aggressive than us but that’s the way it goes. Our kids will learn. I told the kids after Thursday night that if you lose a match, don’t lose the lesson. If you get beat and know why you get beat and try to improve then all is not lost.

“Hopefully we learned. There were some matches against Celina we should have won but again, it‘s a learning experience. We just aren‘t there yet. We are young and we have a lot of learning to do.”

Finishing 4-1, Shutts was pleased with the day as a whole.

One of the biggest surprises came in the final round when Wave wrestler Jon Edwards hooked up with Chris Wilson at 170 pounds.

In that match, Edwards pinned the state qualifier from Monroe.

“That was Jon’s idea,” said Shutts. “He wanted to wrestle that kid. We had the match well in hand and I told him it was okay. I didn’t see a problem with it. I think it shows a lot of character from him because he wants to step up and take on tougher competition. I think he laid the Hammer on him.”

With Celina from the north and Clermont from the Cincinnati area, the completion was stiff.

“I think because of the competition coming in from all around, this is one of the better invites in the area,” Shutts admitted. “We see some of these teams in tournament so it’s a good way for us to see everyone.”

Greenville saw Nelson Roberts, Edwards and Ian Warner go undefeated on the day.

“I was really proud of the way Ian wrestled today,” Shutts said. “He was very aggressive and I’m very proud of him. As a team, we aren‘t there yet but we aren‘t that far away either. As the season progresses, our sophomores will be a load to handle.”

As for Arcanum, Rick Stone saw a lot of positives on his squad.

“We are a young program and we made a lot of young mistakes,” said Stone. “As long as we keep working hard, that’s what matters. I keep telling the boys that it’s not about right now and we are looking at the end of the season.

Before the start of the season, Stone said he had a young team and he had a lot of kids that were in need of mat time.

Saturday, his kids got that time one way or another.

“Forfeits don’t work with me,” said Stone. “You get the win but you don’t learn anything. I want my kids on the mat. Even if they lose, they gain experience. It’s the only way to get better. If you have to take your lumps, then so be it, but you were on the mat where you needed to be. It’s the only way to get better.”

With a 2-3 record, Stone was happy.

“We knew Celina and Greenville were going to be tough and we never saw Monroe before,” said Stone. “I’m very happy with the way things went for us today. I was very impressed with Keggan Artz (126) and Austin Ripple (132) today. Both wrestled some exceptional competition today and did extremely well.”

Greenville will be in action Tuesday at Coldwater while Arcanum will be in action at Versailles Saturday.
