PIQUA- Before the start of the match, Mississinawa Valley volleyball coach Scott Brewer had just one question on his mind.

“Which team would show up?”

It didn’t take long for Brewer to find out as his Lady Blackhawks lost the three straight sets to Covington Tuesday, 25-20, 25-20, 25-23, eliminating his team from the OHSAA sectional tournament.

“The team from last Monday night is the team that showed up tonight,” said Brewer in reference to the match with Twin Valley South just over a week ago. “Our whole key is to make a good pass, and get a good set. Tonight we just weren’t passing.. The setters were having to come way off the net and setting 10 balls to girls that don’t hit 10 balls. We just weren’t making good passes.”

After dropping the first two set by identical scores on 25-20, the Hawks started to pick things up in the third. Mississinawa Valley built a 21-17 lead only to watch it slip away.

“We got some nice passes up, played our game and we were in control,” Brewer said. “Then we just made too many errors and we handed the game to them on a platter. Don’t take anything away from Covington, they played well. We started the night out like a ball of fire and then we hit a wall.”

Senior Mallory Livingston finished the night with 15 kills, 14 digs and five blocks. When Livingston was on the net, the Hawks prospered. With her in the back row, the Buccs made hay.

“When she was in the front row, we made some nice hay,” Brewer stated. “We played nice defense on the Crawford (Caitlyn) and the Kihm (Shelby) had a lot of kills that were just dumps tonight and it just took us out of our game.

“At this point, every game is a season,” Brewer continued. “If you win, you come back and if you don’t, it’s over.”

Hope Neargarder had 12 assists, 6 kills, 9 blocks, while Victoria Humphries had 12 assists and 2 aces. Maddie Murphy chipped in with 6 kills and 10 digs.
