GREENVILLE - Tuesday night’s match with St. Marys proved to be a microcosm of the Greenville Lady Wave volleyball season.

For Greenville, it’s been all or nothing and Tuesday, it was nothing.

After putting up a hard fight in the opening game, only to lose 26-24, Greenville went down quick in the second and third games, losing 25-14, 25-16 to the Riders.

The look at times on the face of Greenville coach Leslie Hoelscher said it all.

“It’s the same story night in and night out,” said Hoelscher. “We start out strong and our hearts are all in the game and they play the way I want them to play and we end up losing the match. The other team will start scoring multiple points on us and all of a sudden, we deflate. It has pretty much been like this all year. We can’t finish games. We can’t keep up the same energy, motivation and skill level that we should. It’s been a constant problem but it is getting better.”

Despite having the momentum after losing the first game, Greenville let the momentum swing to the other side of the floor.

“We aren’t mentally tough,” Hoelscher said. “I really don’t have an answer. We go from playing the best we can play to losing focus and hitting our defensive spots like we’re supposed to. We got away from the things that were working in the first game. We made way too many mistakes.  We weren’t using our heads.”

At the net, Greenville looked like world beaters at times, making good set and kills and blocking the ball.

“We have a young team,” Hoelscher said. “I have a sophomore middle hitter and she does a good job for me but we are very inexperienced. I just wish we were more mentally tough, that’s all.”

The Wave junior varsity fell in three also, winning the opener 25-21 but dropping the last two by scores of 11-25 and 14-25.

Greenville, 9-7 on the year will play at Springfield Thursday.
