GREENVILLE- The Greenville Lady Wave went to 6-2 on the season Saturday after splitting two games at Stebbins Field.

In the opening game of the day, Greenville scored runs in the first, second, fourth and the fifth to post a 7-2 victory over Celina.

In the win, Haley Luce had three runs batted in for the Wave while senior Ashley Hanes picked up the victory to go 4-1 on the year.

In the second game for Greenville, it was West Liberty-Salem breaking a 4-4 score with three runs in the seventh to gain the victory and remain undefeated on the year.

In the loss, Paige Wolter had three hits in four trips to the plate, includung two triples while Kate McDermitt had a two run double.

Sophomore Karlee Lennon took the loss in the second game..

“They (WLS) have been to the final four five straight years,” said Wave coach Jerrod Newland in a phone interview. “We played well enough but we gave up three runs in the last inning and couldn’t recover. We made some mistakes and they took advantage of them and that’s what good teams will do.”

Tonight, the Wave will host Vandalia-Butler in the GWOC opener. A year ago, the Lady Aviators were second in the North Division behind Greenville. If Greenville wants to repeat as North champions, it all starts tonight against Vandalia-Butler.

“We are coming back as the top two teams in the division,” said Newland. “We just have to show up tonight and bring our ‘A’ game. We play them tonight and then go to their place tomorrow night. If we play well, we should be alright but if we drop two straight, we can kiss the conference good-bye. The worse we can do is a two game loss to them and a split is ok but we want to take two because that puts the division out of reach pretty much. These next two games could mean the conference. Lose two and you’re pretty much out of comission. Anything worse than a split and you’re done.”

Both games are 5 p.m. starts, beginning tonight at Stebbins Field.

In other action from Saturday, the Versailles Lady Tigers picked up a victory over Newton, 15-10.

In Saturday baseball action, Arcanum swept a pair from Ansonia 28-0 and 12-0, while Bradford dropped a pair to Marion Local 14-5 and 22-5.

Versailles took two from Graham 8-0 and 9-2. The Tigers opened the third with seven runs in the opener while gettin four runs in the fourth in the second game.

Lee Ruhenkamp got the opening game win, going the distance, allowing three hits and striking out four and allowing two walks.

In the second game, Kyle Niekamp went 4.2 innings, scattering two hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Greenville split a pair with Celina, taking the opener 7-6 and dropping the nightcap, 6-3.
