Union City wins slugfest at MV - Indians snap long losing streak

By George Starks

UNION CITY - It was the first win for the Union City Lady Indians in nearly four years and it came at the expense of Mississinawa Valley.

“It’s been so long for these girls,” said Union City coach Stacy Van Pelt. “They work hard and they earned this win. They are proud and they should be.”

On a night when no lead was safe, Union City had to fight for everything it got before posting a come from behind 17-14 softball victory Monday.

That comeback started when the Tribe found themselves down 7-3 early and was able to get back to a tie at 7-7.

In the fifth, Mississinawa Valley tacked on three more, two coming off the bat of senior Haley Cox, a shot that took one hop before clearing the left centerfield fence.

Heading into the sixth, the Indians trailed 10-8 but that would be the last time Union City would trail.

The Indians used a nine run sixth inning to take what would seem to be a safe lead at 17-10 but Van Pelt was not comfortable with that.

“I was happy with the lead but with the way things were going, there was no way I could be comfortable,” said Van Pelt. “I had the confidence knowing we could prevail. This win is indescribable. I am so proud of these girls. They have waited so long for this. I’m very happy for them. This win is going to carry us through the rest of the year, it’s that huge.”

With the bottom of the seventh at hand, the Hawks were able to get four more runs but junior MaKayla Honn closed things out with a strikeout.

“She is our bread and butter,” said Van Pelt. “All these kids were out there fighting and diving for balls. It was just unbelievable.”

With the loss, Mississinawa Valley fell to 3-5 on the season and losing to the Indians made the loss even tougher.

“It’s a hard pill to swallow,” said Hawks coach Jeff Adams. “One thing about my girls is that they never gave up. They kept fighting and scrapping the whole time. We had a bad inning there in the sixth but when you are young, it happens sometimes. I’m proud of the girls because they never quit fighting. Give Union City credit. They hit the ball well and scored the runs when they needed them. When you put 14 runs on the board, you usually win but it wasn’t to be tonight for us.”

The win put the Indians at 1-3 on the season. Mississinawa Valley played host to Arcanum Tuesday and will visit Bradford on Thursday.

In action around the county...

The Versailles Lady Tigers put on a late rally but fell short on Monday with a 2-1 loss against Midwest Athletic Conference opponent St. Henry.

Versailles allowed a run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning to give the Lady Redskins a 1-0 lead.

The Greenville Lady Wave stayed in the hunt for the GWOC North title Monday. Heading to Troy to do battle with the Trojans, Greenville rolled to a 19-3 thrashing of Troy. The win gave the Wave a 10-4 record overall and a 2-1 mark in the GWOC North.

In baseball action, Greenville topped Troy 13-9 while Colwater hammered Ansonia 13-2.

Versailles needed extra innings to top Celina 7-2 on the road. The Tigers got five runs in the ninth to win the non-conference affair.

Wednesday’s sports schedule will see Greenville tennis playing at Brookville and Tri-Village baseball and softball is at Union City in 5 p.m. starts.
