Jets use fourth quarter surge to fly past Hawks

PITSBURG- For three straight quarters, Mississinawa Valley had its way with Franklin Monroe.

So much that the Jets were staring at a loss in the opening round of their own tournament and a consolation game with Arcanum.

Trailing the Blackhawks, 34-30 with eight minutes left to play, Franklin Monroe literally out-ran the Hawks in the fourth quarter to post a 47-37 victory.

“We’ve not played four quarters of basketball in a game this year,” said MV coach Rodney Saintignon. “We’ve been in games against tough teams but we want to play three maybe three and a half quarters then shutdown. Until they learn they can’t do that, this is going to happen to us all the time. Period!”

Trailing by as much as seven points in the third quarter, the Jets kicked in the afterburners and slowly started to chip away.

With 3:36 left in the game, Franklin Monroe went on a 9-1 run to take a 39-35 lead.

A lead the Jets would not lose the rest of the way.

Franklin Monroe would eventually go on a 14-1 run before the Hawks would score again.

A big part of that run would come from the hands of Martin Maksvytis who would get the rout started with a big bucket to spark the Jets.

“We had to have a big moment in this game tonight and Martin gave that to us,” said FM coach Troy Myers. “He is only a sophomore and is playing just his seventh game as a varsity player and to see him shoot an ill-advised three in transition and then have the confidence to go to the corner and bury the next shot. This is who we are as a team. To be that resilient and do that as a team defines us. We weren’t getting the stops we needed.”

Junior Travis Fietshans and senior Devon Fourman led the Jets with 11 points each but Fietshans had 13 rebounds.

“Take nothing away from Travis, he had a whale of a game and put us on his shoulders for three and a half quarter,” said Myers. “For that stretch, honestly, they (MV) out played us. They have a scrappy group and they gave us all we wanted tonight.”

The Hawks were led by Dane Blumenstock with a game high 17 points.
