Versailles Bowling...
Boys, Girls Advance to District

Varsity Girls Bowling Team
Sectional Champions!

The Versailles Varsity Girls Bowling team competed in the 2012 OHSAA Sectional Bowling Tournament at Marian Lanes in Huber Heights on Friday, February 17th. The team format for the Sectional Championships consists of 3 games of regular bowling followed by 6 baker games. The 4 teams with the highest total pin count advance to the District tournament. Schools competing in this Sectional were: Ansonia, Bellefontaine, Benjamin Logan, Catholic Central, Chaminade-Julienne, Graham, Greeneview, Greenon, Indian Lake, Kenton Ridge, Mechanicsburg, Mississinawa Valley, Northeastern, Northwestern, Sidney, Shawnee, Southeastern, Springfield, Urbana, Versailles, and West-Liberty Salem.

“You girls had a great season this year and your hard work has really shown in your scores the last 5 weeks of the conference season. Let’s go out today and show everyone what the Lady Tigers can do.” The Lady Tigers got off to a great start by rolling a solid 932 in their first game and putting them in 2nd place behind Sidney. The second game was absolutely crazy. The Lady Tigers started off on fire after making a couple adjustments after the change of lanes for the second game. They obliterated their own school record they set a few weeks ago of 996 by rolling an outstanding 1,078 game. (Tori Minnich 257, Megan Monnin 229, Brooke Wehrkamp 210, Paige Holsapple 205, and Joanna Cruz 177) Needless to say after the second game, the competing schools and their fans took notice of the Versailles Lady Tiger Bowlers! The girls finished by rolling another fine game of 960 to roll a tournament leading 2,970. The ladies also blew away the old school record of 2,681 set in the 2008-09 Season. What a great time to do that!

The top 6 teams going into the (6) Baker Games were: Versailles 2970, Sidney 2858, Graham 2799, Mechanicsburg 2622, Urbana 2605 and Greenon 2564. “At this point in the tournament, the girls were sitting in a very good position to make it to Districts. The bottom would have to drop out for them to not make it. I knew these kids had it in them, but to roll these scores under this type of stress and pressure was incredible, especially for a young team. It was extremely fun to coach and watch.”

“Sidney is only 59 pins behind us and we will be bowling with them during the Bakers. They will be loud and distracting, so just focus on what you need to do and let’s take home the Sectional Championship!” The Lady Tigers rolled a 170 to Sidney’s 153. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th games belonged to the Yellow Jackets 220-198, 212-181 and 168 to 136. The Tiger’s lead was now down to 44 pins with 2 Baker Games to go. The momentum was on Sidney’s side. “The good news here is we are going to Districts and we are still in the lead by 44 pins. Let’s finish these last 2 games strong and take home the Championship!” The Lady Tigers won the last 2 Baker Games 155-139 and 206-203. This was the 1st ever Sectional title for the Lady Tiger Bowlers. “This was a total team effort from all 8 girls. One of the girls was struggling the 1st game and in the 4th frame I made a change and Tori was able to put together a string of 6 strikes. The Baker Games were no different. When 1 or 2 of the girls started to struggle, the other girls came in and kept it going. I am so proud of these girls. All of their physical games have improved, but competing as a team is the key for them this year.”

Final Standings for our Sectional: Versailles 4016, Sidney 3953, Graham 3825, Mechanicsburg 3764, Urbana 3593 and Greenon 3576. Teams competing in the Districts Saturday, February 25th are the teams above and the following: McAuley, Fairfield, Colerain, Mason, Northwest, Franklin, Oak Hills, Beavercreek, Fairmont, Troy, Wayne, Stebbins, Xenia, Mercy, Middletown, Loveland, Glen Este and Lebanon. 5 Teams and 5 Individuals will be advancing to the State Competition in Columbus.

The Lady Tigers were led by Sophomore Brooke Wehrkamp with a 626, Sophomore Megan Monnin with a 604, Sophomore Paige Holspapple with a 568, Sophomore Tori Minnich with games of 257 and 222 and Senior Joanna Cruz with a 205.

Boys Bowling - 3rd in Sectionals
Advances to District Tournament

The Versailles Varsity Boys Bowling team competed in the 2012 OHSAA Sectional Bowling Tournament at Marian Lanes in Huber Heights on Wednesday, February 15th. The team format for the Sectional Championships consists of 3 games of regular bowling followed by 6 baker games. The 6 teams with the highest total pin count advance to the District tournament. The following teams competed in the sectional: Ansonia, Bellefontaine, Benjamin Logan, Catholic Central, Chaminade-Julienne, Graham, Greeneview, Greenon, Indian Lake, Kenton Ridge, Mechanicsburg, Mississinawa Valley, Northeastern, Northwestern, Sidney, Shawnee, Southeastern, Springfield, Tri-Village, Urbana, Versailles, and West Liberty-Salem

“Our chances are a little better this year due to 6 teams qualifying for sectionals instead of 4 like last year. If the kids bowl like I know they can, we can move on to Districts.” The Tigers got off to a great start, rolling 1,060 in their first game. The second game was a little bit of a struggle with the move to a different pair of lanes and the lane conditions changing a little bit. Their total was 913, but the Tigers remained in 4th position after 2 games. The Tigers seemed to figure it out again in game 3 by rolling a nice 1,016. This gave the Tigers 2,989 pins and enough for 3rd place heading into the 6 baker games.

“We need to stay focused and bowl well in the Baker’s. Let’s put some big numbers up and win this Sectional.” The Tigers started off very slow by not having a mark in the 1st 4 frames. However, they found a way to pull out a 192 by rolling a bunch of strikes in the middle of the game. The Tigers kept grinding out some games that would not hurt them in the standings with 212, 197 and 206. After 4 games, they remained comfortably in 3rd place. “Going into Game 5, we were in great shape to qualify for Districts. We just needed a couple of big games to possibly go around the top 2 teams.” The Tigers almost snuck up on them by rolling 257 and 226 in their final 2 games to roll an very nice 4,279 series.

Kenton Ridge ended up in 1st with a 4,319 followed by Southeastern with a 4,300. The remaining spots went to Greenon 4,140, Mechanicsburg 4,104 and Northwestern with a 4,041. The OHSAA District Tournament will take place at Eastern Lanes in Middletown. Teams competing are the top 6 from our sectional listed above along with St. Xavier, Oak Hills, Fairfield, Elder, Anderson, LaSalle, Badin, Centerville, Beavercreek, Troy, Fairmont, Wayne, Butler, Archbishop Moeller, Lakota West, Lebanon and Wilmington. “We have the absolute toughest District in the State. Taking only 4 teams and 4 individuals means we will need to put up some numbers on Friday. This team has the capability to do so. I cannot wait until Friday.”

The Tigers were led by Junior Nathan Peters with a 668, Senior Kyle Bohman with a 630 and Sophomore Michael Davidson with a 626. The Versailles Varsity Boys Bowling Team will be competing in the 2011 OHSAA District Bowling Tournament at Eastern Lanes in Middletown on Friday, February 24th at 9:30am.
