Bradford derailed at ‘The Depot’

BRADFORD- The Bradford Lady Railroaders did all they could do to upend Mississinawa Valley Thursday but a 12-0 run to start the second half proved to be the difference as MV toppled Bradford, 57-45.

We’ve been strong in the third quarter all year,” said Hawks coach Rodney Saintignon. “It’s been our best quarter of the year. We didn’t play a strong first half and we had a strong first quarter but we didn’t finish the half strong.”

Holding a 24-18 lead at the break, the Hawks went on an offensive rampage to start the third frame.

Starting with a 12-0 run, the Hawks laid a 17 point scoring blitz on the Roaders in the third while allowing just seven points in the frame.

At the end of three, Mississinawa Valley was in command, 41-25.

The difference for Mississinawa Valley was the ability to protect the ball in the third quarter. After allowing 15 miscues in the first two frames, the Hawks got it together, allowing just three turnovers while forcing seven Bradford turnovers on defense.

“I told the girls at half-time that we needed to take care of the ball a little better,” said Saintignon. “It was a close game in the first half but we had too many turnovers and we weren’t protecting the ball very well. I told them to be aggressive on defense and talk to each other and keep yourselves pumped up and not to get down on themselves. We didn’t have a good first half but we didn’t get down on ourselves. We stayed pumped up, had fun and started to play good basketball.”

It was also a night when the Hawks would be able to control the boards on the offensive end, yanking down nine boards and converting three into immediate points.

Overall, MV out-rebounded Bradford 29-22.

“We did a good job on the boards tonight,” Saintignon said. “We had too many turnovers and we need to get that under control. We try to run the floor and we get in too big of a hurry. We need to slow down a little bit. We are getting better but we can’t play like this and expect to beat Tri-Village. I’ll tell you that right now.”

On offense, Mallory Livingston led the way with 16 points while Shelby Rehmert chipped in with 13 points in support.

Bradford coach Dennis Fair had little good to say after the game.

“We had our chances,” said Fair. “We have to capitalize on those opportunities. Take nothing away from Mississinawa. They made their shots and free throws. Can’t take nothing away from them. They made their shots and we didn’t. “

Bradford put two into double figures also, led by Brooke Dunlevy with 13 points backed up by Alyshia Patty with 11.
