UNION CITY- When the Mississinawa Valley Lady Blackhawks needed the scoring the most, it wasn’t there.

With things knotted at 42-42 at the end of regulation, Newton held the Hawks scoreless in the four minute overtime to down the Hawks 48-42.

“It was like deja vue all over again,” said Hawks coach Rodney Saintignon. “Our shooting just wasn’t there. I don’t have the official stats yet but I can’t believe we shot better than 30 percent. Mallory (Livingston) had a three and Maddie (Murphy) had three treys and other than that, the rest of the scoring came in the paint I think. It’s the same old story of us not hitting shots from the outside that we need to hit. We were shooting but the shots just weren’t falling.”

Through the regulation, Mississinawa Valley was consistent on offense, scoring 11, 10, 10 and 11 in the four quarters while allowing 14, 8, 16 and four. The difference was no points in the four minute overtime.

“Newton’s defense played great we just couldn’t put the ball in the hole in the overtime,” said Saintignon. “I have to give them credit. They played great defense.”

Mississinawa Valley had its chances late in regulation but couldn’t convert.

“We missed foul shots that we could have made in the fourth quarter,” Saintignon admitted. “When Newton got the lead in the overtime, they went into a stall and we had to foul. They had just one field goal in the overtime but hit four foul shots and that was the difference.”

What has become commonplace with the Hawks was no different Thursday with Newton. One strong quarter and this time it was the fourth. Trailing 38-31 after three, MV went on an 11-4 fourth quarter run to gain the tie at the end of regulation.

“We have to learn to play four quarters of basketball,” Saintignon said. “I can’t take anything away from my kids; we played hard the whole game. We had too many turnovers and we still scored through the four quarters. Newton shot the ball well. Our defense was good, Newton earned its points.”

Livingston finished with 18 and Murphy 16 but after that, the support wasn’t there.

Everybody has to contribute for us to win,” Saintignon stated. “Shelby Rehmert has been scoring a lot lately and they held her to three points. That hurts. I know things like this happen and I look for her to come back the next game and be in double digits. Hope Neargarder had an off night. So it happens and the next game, we may be right back on track again.”

The Hawks will be in action today at Union High School in Modoc starting at 1 p.m.
