Basketball camp proves big in Arcanum
48 future Lady Trojans participate

ARCANUM- “The future of Lady Trojan basketball starts here with our youth. You have to build your youth program and when you do that, you’re going to have success.”

Those were the words of Arcanum Lady Trojan basketball coach Rachel Fearon as the 2012 Lady Trojan basketball camp came to an end Thursday.

With 48 in camp, it was not only a successful camp but an exciting one as well.

“It was very exciting for me as a coach to see this many kids turn out for the camp,” said Fearon. “These are future Lady Trojans out here and to be able to coach kids that will be playing here in their high school years for me is very exciting as well. We really want to show these girls how much fun basketball is and I think they saw that this week. They were screaming and yelling all week and cheering for their teams and I think they had a lot of fun.”

Upon walking into the gymnasium, one thing was made obvious. The enthusiasm was there.

“It’s great to hear that kind of enthusiasm coming from them and I think it helped our high school girls,” Fearon noted. “For the younger girls, I know they’re having fun and that’s what I want them to learn is that basketball is fun.”

In the four days, Fearon and her junior varsity coach Abby Moore as well as several high school players, taught the young campers the basics of basketball.

“We really tried to push the fundamentals,” said Fearon. “Basically just passing, dribbling, shooting and defense were the things we focused on. We tried to do it in fun ways. Wednesday, we got a little three-on-three action in there so the kids were learning as well as having fun. I think the big thing is to teach them what ‘team’ means.”

As the camp concluded, many individual awards were handed out but according to Fearon, one thing happened that stressed the team concept.

“No one left here empty handed. Everyone got something,” said Fearon. It takes everyone working together to make a successful program. From the ones cheering the five on the floor to the ones winning the hot shot competition, it’s all about the team.”

Along with the hot shot and relay competitions, Fearon had each team earning points for their teams. Again, stressing the team concept of the game.

With 48 on hand, Fearon said that there was a message being sent to the youngsters.

“I want them to know I’m here for them,” Fearon stated. “This is the future of Arcanum girl’s basketball and when kids see the varsity and junior varsity coach taking an interest in them, they know we care about them and what they will be in the future. I think it means a lot to them as players.”

Fearon also spoke of her high school players who were on hand.

“I was very impressed with them,” Fearon said. “Their leadership skills have improved so much. It’s hard to believe how much difference a year can make.”

The camp involved second through sixth grade girls.
