Wave season ends at state

Shutts looks to next year
By George Starks

GREENVILLE- When the 2011-12 wrestling season began, Wave wrestling coach John Shutts wasn’t totally sure of where his team would rank during the season. The veteran Greenville coach said his team was young and inexperienced and was going to experience some growing pains.

By the end of the season, Shutts had two going to the state meet in senior Jon Edwards and junior Nelson Roberts.

In addition, the Wave string of non-losing seasons stayed intact as Greenville finished 8-8 on the year and in the final polls, Greenville was ranked ninth in the Miami Valley.

At state, Roberts lost his first match 20-11.

“I think he was better than that score indicated,” Shutts said. “He lost 4-3 in his consolation match but he wrestled better and I think he was intimidated by the whole scene when he got there. It was his first time as a competitor. When you walk out of that tunnel and you see the lights and the crowd, it’s different.”

It was also a day that saw Jon Edwards go down early.

“We got there, Jon told me he was not feeling well,” Shutts stated. “I think he had a touch of the flu and he was very sluggish. He beat his first kid 7-0 and really was never in trouble. I kept yelling at him on the mat telling him he had to pick it up and he never responded like normal. I knew about halfway through the match something wasn’t right. It went the way it did and I know Jon won’t use that as a crutch but when you’re not feeling well, things don’t go well and you’re not at your best.”

Starting the season with a 4-1 performance at the Wave duels, things went sour for Greenville before ending on a positive swing with the state trip brought it to an end.

“We started out 4-1 and ended 8-8,” Shutts pointed out. “That means we went 4-7 the rest of the way and we thought we would do better than that.”

With the Wave season ending, Shutts has kids coming that he can build on in the future, starting with an eighth grader, William Nibert, Jr, that went to state at the junior high level at Youngstown.

William’s record during regular season was 24-5. He placed fourth at the Greater Western Ohio Conference tournament in Lebanon then moved on to the district championships in Vandalia, moving his record to 29-6 and qualifying him for the state championships March 9-11.

“It’s nice we have kids like Nibert coming up,” Shutts pointed out. “The problem is we have a lot of kids walking the halls that should be wrestling but aren’t. I hope kids like Nibert will stick with it. They are the future of this program.”

With a covey of juniors and sophomore returning, Shutts has a lot to look forward to in the future.
