Versailles hammers Northridge in sectionals

Arcanum eliminates Ansonia

VERSAILLES- When it was time to play, Versailles wasted no time.

The Tigers were all business Wednesday, dropping an 11-1 thumping on Northridge to go to 20-6 on the season. It was a combination of superb pitching from Zack Neikamp and Jake Wenning as well as some timely hitting.

The Tigers opened the first inning up with three runs and followed that with a four spot in the second with four more in the fourth.

“We definitely came out and hit the ball tonight,” said Versailles coach Mitch Hoying. “We had some timely hitting and our team speed was a factor. We swiped four or five bases tonight when we needed them.”

If that wasn’t enough to bury the Polarbears, the Bears themselves helped the Tiger offense, committing two errors.

“We took advantage of their mistakes, going from first to third on overthrows,” Hoying pointed out. “We played well today and played much better than we played yesterday.”

Timely hitting was a key in the first. With two out, Zack Neikamp ripped a double to center to score Mike Rutschilling from second. Neikamp would later score on a Bears error to get things going. The Tigers would tack on another run in the frame and from that point; it was all Versailles as Northridge was reeling.

“We were hitting the ball hard and going the other direction to the opposite field,” said Hoying. “We were taking advantage of what they were giving us and going with it.”

From top to bottom, the Tigers had offensive fire power from nearly everyone, the biggest notable being Mitch Gigandet, the eight hitter, with two hits both opposite field shots.

“It’s great to have that in your line-up and he made a great catch out in center,” Hoying said. “Mitch had a great day at the plate and on defense.”

With the win, The Tigers will travel to Tipp City next Wednesday to battle Miami East. One of the losses the Tigers suffered earlier in the season came at the hands of the Vikings.

Arcanum eliminates Ansonia

ARCANUM –When it comes to tournament times, Arcanum coach Randy Baker usually has his team in rare form. Wednesday was no exception as the Trojans pounced on Ansonia and left with a 13-0 sectional win.

To go along with the 13 runs, Arcanum pounded out 13 hits, scoring five times in the first frame, started by a two run double off the bat of Matt Albright.

Arcanum will move on to play Tri-Village next Wednesday at Covington. The Patriots routed Bradford 17-7 Wednesday to advance.
