Lady Trojans advance in sectional tournament

Local Teams Chalk up Wins

ARCANUM- It only took one run for Arcanum to beat Brookville in its opening round sectional tournament game.

The problem was that it took over 24 hours to determine a winner.

Once the game was completed, it saw Arcanum posting a 3-0 sectional victory over the visiting Blue Devils.

Checked on just four hits, Trojan coach, Rick Stone, was quick to point the lack of hits in the game.

“We won and I’m happy with the win, but we didn’t hit,” Stone pointed out. “At the start of the season for the first 10 games or so, we were hitting the ball really well. Here lately, it’s been hit or miss. I think the rain delay actually helped us though. Yesterday, we had the lead but kept popping everything up. Today, we were hitting the ball hard for the two innings we did get to bat so I saw some improvement there.”

With 3.5 innings in the books Monday, the heavy rains came, putting the game on hold for the next 24 hours.

During that time, the Trojans scored what would prove to be the winning run in the first frame.

With two down, Arcanum’s Josie Weaver reached on an error.

One batter later, Cheyenne Aikman would get her home with a single to center.

On Tuesday, Arcanum would put two more runs on the board to post the final score but all three runs would come by way of Brookville miscues.

With Miami East up next for the Trojans (Wednesday at East) the bats and base running mistakes will need to improve for the Trojans.

“I told Coach Weaver we can’t make these mistakes against Miami East. We have to play ball,” said Stone. “Hopefully the girls will be ready to play ball.”

It was another outstanding outing for pitcher Erija Nealeigh.

In the seven innings, Nealeigh allowed five hits with four strike-outs and no walks.

“It was just another outstanding game for her,” Stone admitted. “If we can give her the offensive support she needs and can play solid defense behind her, we are going to be a tough team to beat. We can’t afford to go to Miami East like we did the last time and not hit. We don’t want another game like that.”
