Lady Trojans tuning up for new season
By George Starks

ARCANUM- If a coach had a good reason to be excited about a team; Arcanum coach Rachel Fearon has every reason.

Thursday, her Lady Trojans welcomed Lehman Catholic in for the third scrimmage of the season.

Despite a power outage in Arcanum and a 30-minute wait before taking the floor, the Trojans never lost focus on the task at hand.

Arcanum won all four quarters in stellar fashion over the Cavaliers on a night when many players stepped up and formed a solid team that was able to take it to the opposition.

Despite some minor mental mistakes, Fearon was pleased with what her team brought to the table.

“I thought we played well on offense,” said Fearon. “I thought we moved the ball well but there is room for improvement but we were taking care of the ball better. I think the mistakes we made earlier was just us trying to get into the flow of the game. With the way things went tonight, with the power going out, we just needed to settle down and we did.”

On defense, junior Abby O’Donnell and freshman Rebecca Deo, dominated on the boards on defense. Getting control of the ball, delivering the outlet pass and in the case of the junior, running the fast break.

“Making the outlet and running the break is something we have been working on a lot and we started working on it back in the summer,” said Fearon. “I can’t tell the girls how crucial it is to get the outlet pass out. We can’t stand under the bucket and hold the ball. We drill them every day on this. It’s just that crucial. I was very happy tonight with Rebecca Deo and how aggressive she was. I’ve been after her to be more aggressive and tonight she was jumping to get rebounds.”

Alli Ashworth was a force from outside, knocking down jump shots as well as a few triples.

“Ali was stroking it tonight,” Fearon pointed out. “Toward the end, I think she was rushing it a little bit to get it off. But she can stroke the ball, she can’t rush her shot though.”

Defensively, the Trojans never let up.

“Defensively, I think we really got after it,” Fearon admitted. “We went to the 2-3 zone in the fourth quarter but that’s not my kind of ball. I like the more aggressive style of basketball.”

Despite seeing a lot of positives, Fearon knows there’s always room for improvement.

“I would like to see our court awareness get better,” Fearon pointed out. “Our offensive spacing in our sets could be better but that just comes with time.”

With one week to go until opening night, will the Trojans be ready for the Jets?

“We’re getting there,” Fearon quipped. “We’re going to work hard all week.”

Arcanum and Franklin Monroe will tip off at 6 p.m. next Friday at The Battleground in New Madison.
