The following is a breakdown of tournament football parings and a review of the past 14 years of football pyayoff information since the OHSAA went from the top four in the respective regions to the current eight team format.
Also is the breakdown of the finals and radio and television information.
 
FOURTEENTH YEAR WITH 192 QUALIFIERS: This is the 14th year that the OHSAA football tournament field consists of 192 total qualifiers. Each of the 24 regions qualified eight teams to the tournaments, which consist of five rounds. The first round is the regional quarterfinals, and teams that finish first through fourth in their regions in the final OHSAA computer rankings serve as hosts. Teams may choose an alternate site to host first-round games and do not need approval from the OHSAA to do so. In bracket order, team one hosts team eight, team four hosts team five, team two hosts team seven and team three hosts team six. The OHSAA will designate neutral sites for regional semifinal, regional final and state semifinal games, and no rebracketing will occur until the state semifinals.

TIMES:
Regional games on Friday begin at 7:30; games on Saturday begin at 7:00.
FORMAT:
Thirty-two teams in six divisions (192 total schools) qualified for the tournaments, with selections based on the OHSAA Football Computer Rankings. To qualify for the tournaments, schools must have finished first through eighth in their assigned region.
ADMISSION:
$7.00 per person presale; $9.00 per person at the gate.
FINAL COMPUTER RATINGS:
The final computer ratings appeared on the football page at www.ohsaa.org Sunday morning, October 28, 2012. Regional quarterfinals pairings were announced that afternoon.
FOOTBALL SCHOOLS:
There were 717 football-playing schools this year. The division breakdowns are:
Division I: 118 schools (enrollments of 494 or more);
Division II: 119 schools (enrollments of 327 through 493);
Division III: 120 schools (enrollments of 243 through 326);
Division IV: 122 schools (enrollments of 172 through 242);
Division V: 116 schools (enrollments of 120 through 171);
Division VI: 122 schools (enrollments of 119 or less).
Divisions are based on enrollments of males in grades 9 through 11 as reported to the State Department of Education in October 2010. The 2013 season will begin the new two-year divisional alignment cycle.
TOURNAMENT PARTICIPATION:
Of the current 717 member schools playing football, 87-percent have made the tournament at least once in its history.
The number of first-time participants since 2000 by year include seven in 2012, eight in 2011, six in 2010, 14 in 2009, 12 in 2008, 14 in 2007, 10 in 2006, 12 in 2005, 16 in 2004, 12 in 2003, 21 in 2002, 17 in 2001 and 26 in 2000.
There are currently 96 member schools playing football who have never qualified for the state tournament.
TOURNAMENT ATTENDANCE
: Total attendance for the OHSAA football tournaments has been over 8.1 million in the last 13 years, when the OHSAA football tournaments moved to the 192 qualifiers and five round playoff format. In 2011 the total tournament attendance (186 games) was 515,249 for an average of 2,770 per game. The state finals (six games) attendance total was 48,695 for an average of 8,116 per game.
STATE FOOTBALL FINALS TICKET BOOKS ON SALE:
Ticket books for all six state football championship games are currently on sale through the Canton/Stark County Convention and Visitors’ Bureau. The state football finals are Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at Fawcett Stadium in Canton and Paul Brown Tiger Stadium in Massillon. Tickets can be ordered on-line at www.ohsaafootball.com. There are three different ticket packages available. Ticket books for all six games are $48.50. Priority seating will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a $6.50 postage and handling fee per order. Also available, are prepaid parking passes for cars and recreational vehicles. PLAYOFFS ON TELEVISION:
SportsTime Ohio and Time Warner Cable will televise many regional and state semifinal contests during the first four rounds of the OHSAA tournaments. STO/TWC have the exclusive first right of refusal to select contests each round of the tournaments to air on either a live or tape-delayed basis. Other networks have the opportunity to televise regional or state semifinal contests on a tape-delayed basis only if the site can accomodate another broadcast. FINALS ON SPORTSTIME OHIO:
SportsTime Ohio and Time Warner Cable will provide exclusive coverage of the state football finals from Canton and Massillon.
STO’s partnership with Time Warner Cable was forged in 2007 to deliver OHSAA programming to over 3.1 million homes statewide.
STADIUMS TOP THE LIST:
Canton Fawcett Stadium and Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium were named No. 1 and 10, respectively, among the nation’s best high school football stadiums, as voted by ESPN.com in 2009. Both stadiums have been named "Famous High School Venues" by the National Federation of State High School Associations.
 
2012 OHSAA Football Playoff Notes
DEFENDING STATE CHAMPIONS:
The five defending state champions that qualified for the 2012 football playoffs still remain after round two.
Cleveland St. Ignatius (Div. I, Reg. 1 #2, 10-1), Trotwood-Madison (Div. II, Reg. 8 #6, 9-2), Creston Norwayne (Div. IV, Reg. 13 #2, 11-0), Kirtland (Div. V, Reg. 17 #1, 11-0) and Maria Stein Marion Local (Div. VI, Reg. 24 #3, 9-2) all defeated their opening round and second round opponents.
Youngstown Cardinal Mooney (Div. III, Reg. 11, 3-6) finished 19th in its region and did not qualify for the playoffs.
WEEK 10 MOVERS:
The four remaining week 10 movers that made it to the second round of the playoffs were defeated.
Nine of the 13 schools that made their move in the last week of the regular season to make it into the playoffs did not advance into the second round.
The largest jump in Week 10 was made by Mayfield (Div. I, Reg. 1, 6-4), which jumped six spots from 14th to eighth in the region.
WELCOME TO THE POSTSEASON:
The lone remaining team making its first postseason trip, Liberty Twp. Lakota East was defeated in the second round by Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller 46-20.
One of the seven schools that earned their first postseason bid in 2012 remains going into round two. Liberty Twp. Lakota East (Div. I, Reg. 4 #7, 8-3) defeated Springboro 45-28 to advance and claim its first playoff victory. The Thunderhawks jumped from 11th to seventh after week 10 to qualify for the playoffs.
The six schools that made the playoffs but did not advance were, Ashtabula Edgewood (Div. IV, Reg. 13 #8, 6-4), Cleveland John Hay (Div. III, Reg. 9 #4, 8-3), Zanesville Maysville (Div. III, Reg. 11 #6, 9-2), , Miamisburg Dayton Christian (Div. V, Reg. 20 #5, 10-1), New Lebanon Dixie (Div. V, Reg. 20 #6, 7-4) and North Robinson Colonel Crawford (Div. VI, Reg. 23 #6, 8-3).
Going into the final week of the regular season there were nine schools ranked in the top-eight of their region that had never made a postseason appearance. Two of those schools dropped out of the top-eight in the rankings with two more making the jump to earn their bid.
ANNUAL CONTENDERS:
Columbus St. Francis DeSales held the longest active streak of consecutive years making the playoffs at 18 years, until the Stallions did not qualify for the playoffs in 2012.
The new active streak belongs to Coldwater, which has made the playoffs for the 17th consecutive year in 2012. The Cavaliers are undefeated at 11-0 and ranked first in Division V, Region 20. The second longest streak is held by Mogadore (Div. VI, Reg. 21 #1, 11-0) at 14 straight playoff years.
The longest streak all-time of consecutive years making the playoffs is 22 years by Cleveland St. Ignatius. This streak started in 1988 and was broken in 2010 when the Wildcats failed to qualify for the playoffs. St. Ignatius returned to the playoffs in 2011 and won the Division I state title.
Newark Catholic (Div. VI, Reg. 23 #2, 9-2) is making its leading 32nd playoff appearance in 2012. Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller (31), Ironton (30), Mogadore (26) and Steubenville (25) all qualified for the playoffs as well, and round out the top-five of most appearances.
Coldwater, Mogadore, Cleveland St. Ignatius, Newark Catholic, Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller all advance to the third round of the 2012 playoffs. Ironton and Steubenville were defeated in the second round.
WELCOME BACK TO THE POSTSEASON:
Of the six schools that made a return to the playoffs for the first time in 20 years or more in 2012, none advanced past the first round.
The six schools were Bradford (Div. VI, Reg. 24, 8-2) has qualified for the first time since 1982. The other schools are Westlake (1989), Cincinnati Northwest (1990), Akron Ellet (1991), Fairport Harbor Fairport Harding (1991) and Streetsboro (1992).
STILL SEARCHING FOR PLAYOFF WIN NO. 1:
24 schools that qualified for the playoffs in 2012 will have to look to next year for postseason victory number one, after first round losses. score their first postseason victory. Six of those schools were first time qualifiers.
Ten schools did record their first playoff victory noted above, with one of those being a first time qualifier.
