PITSBURG - If there is one thing any coach wants to do is beat his alma mater and his former high school coach.

Such was the case for interim Tri-Village soccer coach, Noah Welbaum.

While sometimes dreams come true, it wasn't going to happen for Welbaum.

Franklin Monroe sophomore Brian Robison scored three goals Tuesday and added an assist as the Jets advanced to play Preble Shawnee with a 6-0 victory.

Welbaum had the right idea when he decided to pack everyone back on defense, with the exception of two players.

The strategy was simple.

"We packed the box hoping to keep the Jets out of the goal and get in to a shoot-out situation," said Welbaum. "If we could have forced that with a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation, we could have won this tonight but it didn't work out that way."

All bets were off at the 29:46 mark of the first half when Robison got a great assist from Marcus Horner to give the Jets the only goal they would need.

Horner would back Robison's goal up at the 14:17 point and then Lucas King would get an assist from Robison with 5:00 left to play in the half.

It was a night when the Jets had all aspects of the game covered.

Not only were plenty of goals scored, but Franklin Monroe controlled the tempo, the ball and kept most of the action on the Patriots end of the field.

"That's the kind of team we have here," said FM coach Danny Diceanu. "We were able to contain the ball, move and pass the ball and we try to dissect teams by carving them apart. This is probably the best ball movement we've had in a few years. Last years team was good but this years team is better because they are a year older."

Earlier in the season, the Jets popped the Patriots 2-0 and Diceanu remembered it well.

"In that game, Tri-Village packed it in on us and put eight and nine guys in the box," said the Jets coach. "We got frustrated and we worked on that this week trying to deal with that. We did the same thing to Summit over the weekend and that helped us and it frustrated them but they were still able to move the ball around. So we took a page from them and learned from it."

Robison would add two more goals in the second half while Nick Mobley would get the final score of the night.

"Any time Brian touches the ball he's a threat to score," Diceanu said of his sophomore striker. "He's our field general. He sees the field well and distributes the ball."

The loss brought the curtain down on the Patriots season with a 1-18-2 mark but according to Welbaum, he saw positives come out of it.

"Our seniors went out on a loss but played extremely well," said Welbaum. "We played hard defense and wanted to force the shoot-out. We have improved since the start of the season."

Franklin Monroe will host Shawnee Thursday at 7 p.m.

Volleyball sectional results:

Tri-Village fell to Covington in three games at Piqua Tuesday, 26-24, 25-12, 27-25.

In the Brookville sectional, Versailles hammered Dixie 25-8, 25-9, 25-10 to advance to the sectional finals Saturday. The Tigers will battle the Anna Rockets as Anna advanced by topping Tri-County North in three games, 25-13, 25-23, 25-17.
