The final frontier
By George Starks

Today, I will embark on my final destination. Today, I will fulfill a dream that I have wanted to do since I was a kid. After 26 years in sports, I will reach the pinnacle of my career.

As a lifelong Kentucky Wildcats basketball fan, I’ve always wanted to attend a game at Rupp Arena.

Of course, getting tickets to a Cats game is like pulling teeth with a straw…it’s impossible. So I guess the next best thing is in order and that will happen tonight as the annual blue/white scrimmage will be played on the hallowed floor of Rupp Arena.

Of all the years of covering sports, I’ve done virtually everything a small town sports writer can dream of.

At the professional level, I’ve covered several Bengals and Reds games, including the second game of the 1990 World Series, NASCAR in Indy as well as the Indy 500 and harness horse racing. I’ve watched Tiger Woods play golf and covered the ATP in Cincinnati.

At the college level, there’s been a multitude of things including the 2000 Ohio State/Michigan game… the year the Buckeyes won it all.

When it comes to high school games, name it. I’ve had the pleasure.

But today, I reach the final frontier… Rupp Arena.

At noon, my good friend, Roger Collins, will pick me up and away we will go as there will be several of us making the trip to Lexington. We will eat dinner there and do some shopping.

Oh my gosh! There goes the bank account… lol.

Then the Cats will take the floor around 7:30.

Granted it’s just a scrimmage but it’s not just any scrimmage.

It’s Kentucky.

Need I say more?

Rarely, do I get excited about too many things in sports but this is one of those things I can and already am excited about.
