ANSONIA- Going into Friday's contest with National Trail, it was all to boil down to the Ansonia running game and the Blazers passing game.

The biggest difference came in the form of a former Greenville student.

National Trail quarterback, Garrett Griffin was the difference maker in a 52-28 National Trail victory over Ansonia in Cross County Conference action.

At 6-4 and 165, Garrett was a complete package for the Blazers as he carried the ball 15 times for 142 yards. In addition, he was 11 of 17 for 180 passing yards with two touchdowns, one of 56 yards.

While Garrett got the job done for Trail, the Tigers were riding the legs of freshman Jordan Newman.

The 5-10, 170 pound running back was virtually unstoppable, carrying the rock 24 times, gaining 253 yards and scoring three times.

The final score for the Tigers came on a 57 yard pass from senior QB Kaleb Earick to Colton Stump with 7:432 left in the game.

Trail got the first two scores of the game in the opening frame before the Tigers could get on the board on a 55 yard burst by Newman at the 2:34 mark of the quarter.

After the missed extra point, the Tigers would trail the Blazers 14-6 after the opening 12 minutes of play.

By the end of the half, the Blazers held a commanding 32-14 lead.

"We are just to inconsistent," said Ansonia coach Eugene Hoening. "We are a young team but we have to ignore the youth and treat them like any other varsity team. We have high expectation of all our players."

It was a night when the young Tigers would never quit.

"I have to give credit to my coaching staff," said Hoening. "We've had a couple of injuries and the coaches have got players in there and ready to play. They have done a lot with these guys."

Now 0-4, the Tigers will face Curtis Enis and Bradford for the second time this season.

In the season opening, non-conference game, the Railroaders dropped a 48-12 loss on the Tigers.

Ansonia's homecoming game is also next Friday.
