Game ends in a tie

PITSBURG- When Franklin Monroe went up 1-0 early from a goal by Hannah Lehman at 30:19 and then 2-0 when Allyson Manning scored at the 22:03 point of the opening half; things were looking good for the Lady Jets.

The momentum was in the Jets favor. Everything pointed to a Franklin Monroe victory but it would not end the same way it started for the ladies soccer team.

When the second half clock went to 0:00, the scoreboard read 3-3 in Cross County Conference action Thursday.

Even when Newton got on the board with 14:28 remaining, FM answered at the 4:17 mark. Again, it was Manning getting her second with Lehman picking up her second assist, giving the Jets a 3-1 advantage and a 3-2 lead at the break.

"We gave up two very easy goals. I wanted to yell 'ugggh'," said Jets coach Scott Howell. "It was just a case of bad luck. The ground is dry, hard and the ball is fast. Both teams struggled with possessing the ball. This was a great game and we knew it was coming. Newton came in having lost two straight games and didn't want to lose a third game."

The tie was gained early in the second half (37:16) when Halse Mollette got credit for a very easy goal, scored due to a mistake on defense.

With the tie, Franklin Monroe goes to 1-0-1 on the season with the lone victory coming against Botkins.

"We gained the tie so we lose nothing but we gain nothing," said Howell. "With Newton on the schedule and this being a conference game, it was probably the biggest, if not one of the biggest games of the year. Our competition this year is fantastic and Newton is right there with the best of them."

In just her first year of soccer, senior Allison Snider had her back against the wall with the Indians coming in.

Howell was pleased with her efforts.

"Allison did fantastic," exclaimed Howell. "A first year senior and she stepped up when we needed somebody. She's the heart and the voice of this team and the kids feed off her."

Before the end of the first half, Lehman went down with a minor injury. An injury that hurt FM in the end.

"We are definitely 18 strong and when you lose a presence like Hannah, it's going to have an effect on your squad," said Howell. "Hopefully, it's nothing serious. We get the day off tomorrow (Friday) and she can come out Tuesday and be ready to go."

Tuesday, Franklin Monroe will host Greenville, and Howell admits the Wave will provide stiff competition.

"That will not be easy by any means," admitted Howell. "We have no cupcakes on our schedule. Everybody comes ready to play and Greenville is no exception. They will be ready to play."

The scheduled starting time is 7 p.m.
