Wave netters win two after Butler loss
By George Starks

GREENVILLE- After dropping a heartbreaker to Vandalia-Butler Tuesday, 3-2, the Greenville girls tennis team bounced back Wednesday with a 4-1 victory over Middletown-Madison.

Thursday, the Wave traveled to Eaton and clipped the Eagles wings, 5-0.

Wednesday, Sophia Navas-Davis went three sets with Riley Markle before losing 6-7, 6-4, 7-5, a match that went the limit from start to finish. It was the third loss of the season for the Wave number one singles player.

"That girl from Middletown was a state qualifier last year," said Wave coach Jim Koontz in a phone conversation Friday. "Sophia played hard and gave that girl all she wanted. In fact the Middletown coach told Sophia that she had played her tougher than anyone else had this season. Last year, she beat Sophia like 6-2, 6-2. So that was the best I've ever seen her play."

Michelle Borgerding topped Brooke Schoolcraft 6-1, 6-0 while third singles player, freshman Raquel Navas-Davis scored a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Carlee Mills.

The first doubles team of Alexis Medley and Madison Bixler won 6-4, 3-6, 7-6, after being down 5-2 in the third, over Sophia Mullins and Stephanie Callaghan. In second doubles action, Kirby Lantz and Alex Meyers won in straight sets 6-0,6-1.

"I'm very happy with my doubles teams," said Koontz. "They have come on strong lately. The loss at Butler was very disappointing. We could have won that 4-1 instead of having a 3-2 loss. This Middletown Madison bunch had only two losses and their number two singles player has been winning all year and Borgerding beat her easily. Her and Raquel will both finish 19-1 and Sophia will finish 17-3. None of those kids will lose again this year in the regular season."

Sophia Navas-Davis was able to get back on the winning track against Eaton's Jordan Pugh 6-2, 6-1, Borgerding took Brooke Lohnes 6-1, 6-0, Raquel Navas-Davis beat Amand Hall 6-1, 6-0, all in singles action.

On the doubles court, Medley and Bixler won 6-1, 6-1 while the second double duo of Lantz and Meyers rolled to a 6-4, 6-4.

With the win, Greenville goes to 15-3 on the season with Sidney coming up Tuesday in the GWOC North. That match will be at Greenville starting at 4:30.

Greenville will also host Fairborn on Wednesday, starting at 4:30.
