Werner signs letter to IU East
NEW MADISON - Tri-Village senior Matt Werner signed his letter of intent to play basketball at IU East in Richmond, IN. Friday.

IU East is a NAIA D-II school and Werner will start is college play beginning with the 2013-14 basketball season.

According to Werner, it has been a dream of his since he was a youngster and feels blessed to be able to do this.

Werner will lay for Mark Hester at the Indiana based school as Hester liked the leadership skills possessed by Werner on the court.

Werner, who averaged 10 points and 6.5 assists a game for the Patriots during his senior season, is the son of Darren and Dawn Werner.

IU East is one of 18 schools in the NAIA Division II with four 20-win seasons in the last five years. Werner also is used to winning as he helped Tri-Village finish the 2012-13 regular season undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the state by The Associated Press.

Werner plans to major in business administration and minor in marketing and management.
 
Lady Wave gets win number 600
Saturday, the Greenville girls softball team entered play with 599 victories.

Not long after the start of play with Fairborn, the Wave posted a 12-4 victory and notched win number 600 in school history.

The 600 victories includes wins notched by Fred Matix and now assistant coach Beth Arnold. Both coaches were at the helm of Lady Wave softball for 10 years each.

The victory put the Wave at 12-2 overall on the season and the win marked the halfway point of the 2013 season.
 
 
Lady Wave to compete in Loudonville
The Greenville girls softball team will head to Loudonville this weekend to compete in the annual Champion Challenge.

Greenville is one of eight teams from Ohio invited to take part in the weekend event to be played at Riverside Park Friday and Saturday.

Along with host Loudonville and the Wave will be Colonel Crawford, 2012 Division IV state champion Convoy Crestview, Newton, Massillon Perry, Akron Springfield and Tallmadge.

Teams must qualify with success on the field to receive an invitation to the Champion’s Challenge. Only current or former Ohio High School Athletic Association state champions comprise the field each year.

Each team is guaranteed to play in three games in the eight-team tournament with one game Friday night and two games on Saturday. The team that finishes 3-0 on the weekend will be the tournament champion.

Greenville will begin tournament play against Springfield at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

In the other first-round games, Perry will play Tallmadge, Crestview will play Colonel Crawford and Newton will play Loudonville.

The winner of Greenville and Springfield will play the winner of Perry and Tallmadge at 2 p.m. Saturday. The winner of Crestview and Colonel Crawford will play the winner of Newton and Loudonville.

The two teams that win their first two games will meet for the championship at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Greenville won the Champion’s Challenge in 2009. The Lady Wave finished as the 2008 Champion’s Challenge runner up. Greenville finished third in 2010 and fourth in 2011. The Lady Wave are 8-4 in their four appearances in the tournament.

The eight schools have combined to win 25 state championships, which includes Greenville’s state title in 2007.
