Greenville handles Troy

GREENVILLE- Greenville used a five run fourth inning to break open a 2-0 lead on Troy before posting an 8-1 victory over the visiting Trojans Monday.

The inning saw nine Wave hitters going to the plate with run scoring hits from senior Erin Albright, freshman Jazzlyn Petry and freshman Allison Minnich.

“It was a good day,” said Wave coach Jerrod Newland. “Troy is solid and has four or five really neat kids. Their pitcher is solid and it’s good for us to face a good pitcher like her.”

On offense, the Wave picked up nine hits in the game with Petry getting three knocks of her own, including a triple and three runs batted in.

Greenville got on the board in the first when with one out, junior Haleigh Luce was hit by a picth and later scored on the triple by Petry.

The second run for the Wave came in the third when once again with one out, Luce singled and then scored on a single by Petry, with Luce at second.

“Petry busted them tonight,” said Newland. “She was zoned in on their pitcher but more important, we played good team ball and it was a great team win.”

The victory raised the Wave record to 14-2 overall and 5-0 in the GWOC North division.

Sophomore pitcher Ally Russell picked up her 14th win of the season, going five innings, allowing five hits and two walks.

On defense, Greenville committed two errors but neither were damaging to the Wave cause.

“Our defense looks good,” said Newland. “We will play t6his team again Tuesday at their place and then Xenia on Thursday. Then we go to Loudonville for the Champions Challenge. Eight games in eight days.”

Friday, the Wave will head to Loudonville for the annual Champions Challenge.
Greenville will open with the Akron Springfield Spartans. This will be the first ever meeting between the two schools under Coach Newland.

The Spartans hold the state record with nine D-II championships with the most recent coming in 2005.
