Bowers gets huge Christmas surprise
Former Wave going to the Super Bow
By George Starks

GREENVILLE- Another Greenville graduate will be going to the Super Bowl.

Unlike Matt Light who ended his career with three Super Bowl rings while playing with the New England Patriots, the Wave graduate will be there serving in another role.

Sam Bowers, a student at Bowling Green State University, a 2013 graduate of Greenville and a CNO athletic scholarship winner through Dave Knapp Ford, will be in New York at this year’s Super Bowl.

Majoring in Sports Management, Bowers said it all got started at BGSU

I’m in a group with Sport Management Alliance at Bowling Green and it’s a student run organization,” said Bowers in a phone interview. “They sent 20 people to help out at the Super Bowl to help out in the woods for a year. I ended up applying and was accepted into it. I am really excited about all this. I remember I got the call and I was excited right from the beginning. So now I’m going to one of the best cities, New York and will be working at the biggest sporting event of the year, the Super Bowl.”

Bowers will be making the trip with Manpower out of Maumee, Ohio. According to Bowers, he got accepted right before he came home for Christmas break.

The Super Bowl is the second week of February,” Bowers stated. “I just got interviewed and accepted and got into it the week before the Christmas break. At that point, I had to produce my social security card, my birth certificate and stuff like that and I had to have a background check. Once I got cleared, I got more details about the job. In the interview, they basically asked us about our experience in the sports field. Then there was the written part of the application which asked you about your jobs in the past. I was surprised about that because my previous jobs were working for my Church in Greenville and working for my parents. I think the fact that I am as young as I am worked in my favor. Next year, I will have this under my belt and will be able to bring this to the table. I think it will work in my favor to have this on my resume for future jobs.”

Being accepted to serve, Bowers has yet to learn one major thing.

We don’t know exactly what we will be doing yet,” admitted Bowers. “We haven’t heard back yet because of the background check and everything. If I’m understanding it right, we are going to be showing people where to sit and things of this nature.”

When Bowers got the call stating he was accepted, a little bit of shock came into play before the excitement came.

When I got the call, I was totally surprised,” Bowers admitted. “I thought it would be really cool to get there but I never thought I would be accepted. I was ready to write it off and hopefully be able to go next year so I was really shocked.”

With the game actually being held in East Rutherford, New Jersey, Bowers doesn’t know how much of the game he will get to see.

I’m not too worried about that because I’m looking at this as a big opportunity,” said Bowers. “This is a chance for me to learn what I want to do in real life. It’s just a great opportunity.”

Bowers admitted it will be tough if the Bengals were to make it but it will be even tougher if the Colts make it as he’s a huge Colts fan.

Bowers also said he would be happy to see the Broncos go because of Payton Manning.
