Lady Trojans send seniors off with big victory
By George Starks

ARCANUM- It was only fitting, on senior recognition day; two of the three Arcanum Lady Trojans (Morgan Buck and Rebecca Denniston) would score the opening two buckets of the game.

The third senior (Hannah Prestel) would get the fifth basket of the game and the Trojans would go to 10-11 on the season posting a 54-46 victory over Milton Union Saturday.

“When Morgan and Rebecca got the first two scores of the game, I turned to coach (Abby Moore) and told her we had to get Prestel hers,” said Arcanum head coach Rachel Fearon. “When she did it, that was just a great feeling to know that all three of them scored in the first quarter.”

When at times, the victory was in doubt as the Bulldogs were pushing, it was junior Abby O’Donnell that put the team on her shoulders and ensured Arcanum was not going to lose.

When the game had ended, O’Donnell had scored a game high 26 points and had recorded 12 rebounds, five off the offensive glass.

“Abby came out to play today,” said Fearon of her talented junior. “She is now turning toward her senior year and I think now, she’s ready to take the challenge of knowing that next year, she is the sole leader on this team. Her and Josie (Weaver). I think she is excited about it and it showed in the way she played.”

Arcanum jumped out to the early 12-9 lead after one and held a 23-19 advantage at the break.

With eight minutes left to play, the Trojans were up 37-32 but the Bulldogs were pushing hard, despite being down 31-22 at the 5:13 mark of the quarter.

Milton Union had gotten things even at the 4:38 mark, 41-41, when Brooke Falb connected on a four foot jumper from the left side of the paint.

That was when the Trojans went to work as a team, outscoring the Dogs, 13-4 in the final four plus minutes to gain the victory.

While the Trojans were far from playing their best ball, there were many things they did right, starting with the board work.

Along with the 12 rebounds O’Donnell recorded, Arcanum as a team yanked down 33 total rebounds with nine being on the offensive glass.

Denniston had two of the remaining four offensive boards as freshman Rebecca Deao and Prestel had the other two.

“Our rebounding was excellent and I told the kids before the start of the game that senior day can be such a bad day for everyone but we needed to keep it positive,” said Fearon. “This is a new and exciting era these girls are stepping into and we need to be happy for them.  This is one of the tightest groups of girls I’ve ever been around. We hate to see them go but we have to be happy for them and let them go. Emotions were high out there today but we went out and did what needed to be done. I couldn’t be happier for them.”

With one game left in the regular season before tournament, the Trojans will close out the season at Greenon Tuesday night. A victory over the Rams will give the Trojans an 11-11 seasonal mark.
