Keller and Shook shine

GREENVILLE- Greenville’s Paige Keller and Ansonia’s Samantha Shook took first and second overall in the All Around competition recently in the Dayton City Gymnastics Tournament.

Keller scored an 8.80 on the bars and 9.50 in the vault, both good enough for first place finishes.

In addition, Keller was second on the beam and ninth with her floor routine.

Combined, this scored her a 36.075 and first in the All Around.

“I thought Paige had a great meet,” said Jackie Brisco, coach of the Darke County team. “I thought it was very good preparation for her. I feel like she feels confident in herself and her abilities and she knows what it takes to have a good meet. I am very pleased with Paige. She just had a beautiful day.”

With Keller taking top honors in three of the five categories, it may have been Shook that stole the show.

Over the course of the last month, Shook has been forced to wear a boot on her foot, keeping her from practice and competitions.

Shook scored a 9.125 on the beam, ahead of Keller for her only win of the day. In addition, the Tiger sophomore was third in the floor exercise, fifth in the bars and 10th on the vault, landing her in second in the All Around with a total score of 34.975, 1.1 points behind Keller.

“What she did came as a big surprise,” said Brisco. “She has been fighting a foot injury since about a week after our home meet. She actually hurt her foot at that meet (held at the local YMCA). We didn’t think it was all that bad but it ended up, it was really bruised and was in a boot for a month. This was her first meet in about four weeks of competition. We were looking at this meet as a get back into the swing of things type of a meet. Go out and see what you need to work on and we can go from there type of thing. We knew her foot was still sore. These routines require a lot of pounding on that sore foot and we never expected her to go out and perform the way she did. We were very surprised.”

Franklin Monroe’s Madison Myers scored a 30.900 for her All Around score. In the bars, she had a 7.550, a 7.000 on the beam, an 8.000 on the vault with her best score of the day coming on the floor with an 8.350.

Greenville’s Tessa Schatz was unable to compete due to illness.

“This was kind of like a conference meet,” said Brisco “If you qualify in the top six places in each event in the district and the All Around, then you qualify for state. I think this was a good warm-up for the districts. It was good preparation.”

The Darke County gymnasts will be competing in the Southwest District Championship this Saturday, Feb. 23rd, at Lakota East High School.
