Greenville beats Dunbar in regional semis
Wave grapplers get Tipp City in finals

GREENVILLE- Before the match even started, the Wave wrestlers had all but won their match with Dunbar Wednesday in the regional semi-finals of the state wrestling duels hosted by Greenville.

Dunbar surrendered 42 points to forfeits while Greenville gave up 12 to start the match.

That put Greenville in the driver’s seat as the Wave cruised to a 66-18 victory over the Wolverines.

It’s unfortunate for Dunbar because they have some good looking kids over there but their numbers are down,” said Wave coach John Shutts.

Greenville had the privilege of hosting the opening round of the tournament due to it being a top seed.

That being said, the Wave drew the eight seeded Wolverines.

“I guess it’s the same in any other sport. The top seed gets the lowest seed and is supposed to have the easy first round,” Shutts stated. “That was the situation we were in tonight.”

With all the forfeits Dunbar presented, the Wolverines and the Wave did put four matches on the floor.

In the 138 pound weight class, senior Nelson Roberts pinned junior Cortlin Fentress in 28 seconds. Freshman William Nibert disposed of his opponent by pin at the 1:28 mark of the third and senior Nick Woodruff claimed a pin with 45.3 seconds left in the opening period over junior Marquest West of Dunbar.

Greenville’s Andrew Godwin fell in his 145 pound match, losing by pin.

“We looked good out there tonight, as always,” said Shutts. “Nibert went out and he’s still making some freshman mistakes but he’s learning. Both our seniors got to wrestle tonight (Roberts and Woodruff) and they looked good as well.”

While most freshmen are relegated to junior varsity, Nibert has emerged as one of the premier freshman in the Dayton area and is paying dividends to the Wave varsity cause.

“We (the coaches) have dissected his style of wrestling and everything you see him do is what we coach,” Shutts pointed out. “William has bought into what we teach and has bought and embraced it. Sometimes it takes kids longer to pick up on the moves we do and he’s picked up quickly. I’m not surprised at all by his success.”

Greenville will host round two of the state tournament next Wednesday and will square off with Tipp City.

The Red-Devils came from behind to defeat the Valley View Spartans, 48-42.

Greenville has faced Tipp earlier this season and beat them but Shutts knows that beating a team twice in the same season is no easy task.

“We beat this team, I believe it was 48-33 at the beginning of the year,” Shutts pointed out. “I know they are going to be looking for revenge so we have to get our guys jacked up. When you have to beat a team twice, the monkey’s on your back, not theirs.”

Greenville will host the second round next Wednesday.
