Lady Jets flame out in district game

TIPP CITY- The Franklin Monroe Lady Jets came out like a ball of fire, jumping on Ft. Loramie, 9-4 early.

After that, the fire was soon extinguished as the Redskins poured out an 82-41 district victory.

The loss ended the Jets season at 12-13 overall and a district runner-up trophy.

“The girls worked hard this year and they came out and played hard today,” said FM coach Gavin Spitler. “We just played a very good basketball team. Ft. Loramie is a very tough team. Probably the best team we’ve played all year.”

Once the Jets jumped out to the big lead, the Redskins started Ft. Loramie basketball.

“They moved the ball around and got a lot of open shots,” said Spitler. “The first three or four minutes, we shot extremely well and what kept them in the game was their rebounding. If we could have got some defensive rebounds, we could have been up eight or nine points. Loramie stayed with it with their rebounding. Once their shots started to fall, we just didn’t have enough offensive power once they started hitting their shots.”

If the Redskins had one big advantage, it was the use of a deep bench.

“They just play one kid after another,” said Spitler. “When they go to their bench, they don’t lose anything. They wore us down. At the end of the second quarter, they were starting to pull away.”

With eight minutes in the books, Franklin Monroe trailed 20-12. By the end of the half, the Redskins held a 45-23 advantage.

“I’m proud of these seniors,” said Spitler. “They were the core of this team and good leaders. They played hard and our shots just didn’t go down.”

The loss was the final game for seniors Haley Gray, Hannah Lehman, Allison Snider, Claire Neiswander, Michelle Heckman and Robins.

Grey led the way with 12 points for the Jets.
