PITSBURG - If there would have been a marquee, it would have read:

Backyard battle in The Hangar tonight;
Arcanum’s in the house!

With senior night headlining the night’s volleyball match between host Franklin Monroe and Arcanum, emotions were flying high in The Hangar.

The Jets wanted to send their seniors off with a win while the Trojans wanted to ruin it all.

With both teams sporting only seven wins each, something had to give and on this night, the Jets would fly high, topping the Trojans in three games, 25-16, 25-23 and 25-22.

While both teams had excellent back row play and some solid set at the net, it all boiled down to the fierce play at the net.

“Both team played extremely well,” said Jets coach Jodi Bauman.  “Tonight it was a classic battle of the wills.”

Taking the opening game with what seemed like relative ease, it looked like the Jets would run away with the night in three easy games.

That wasn’t the case.

Sophomore Morgan Booher and senior Alexis Hartzell would be in for a tough fight at the net with senior Abby O’Donnell, Alexis Abner and a host of Trojans that would prove relentless.

“Morgan and Lexi played hard tonight. They were strong and got some good quality sets at the net,” said Bauman. “They (Arcanum) would get a few points on us and we rebounded. In the last game, Arcanum started blocking us and we had to shift what we were doing.”

Even though the Jets had to make changes in the third game, it wasn’t that way in the opening match as Franklin Monroe had the Trojans on their heels.

“We had them backing up,” said Bauman. “We came out of the gate strong and kept pushing them. We were a determined team and it showed tonight. This is the kind of team I want on the floor with sectionals coming up.”

In the second and third games, the Trojans put the pressure on.

Having leads in both games, Arcanum looked to gain victories in both games.

The Jets had other ideas.

Trailing 15-12 in the second, Franklin Monroe never got the lead for good until late in the game grabbing a 24-23 lead and getting the game winning point off a serve by Leah Allread.

The third game saw multiple lead changes as once again, the Trojans would hold a 21-18 lead late in the game.

Senior Rachel Hainline stepped up to the serving line and got six points, including two aces, giving the Jets a 24-22 lead.

After losing serve, the Jets broke the serve of Arcanum’s Emily Kolling to claim the third game win and match victory.

“This was a typical match between these two teams,” said Arcanum coach Terri Day. “Every year, it doesn’t matter what the quality of the team are, it is this kind of a match. They (FM) did not let a thing hit the floor. It was a classic battle at the net. Booher (FM ) had Abby in the beginning but it never got her down and she came back. It was just classic.”

With the win, the Jets go to 8-11 in the season while the Trojans fell to 7-14 overall.

In the junior varsity match, the Jets took the opener 26-24 but it was Arcanum that got the team victory winning the second and third games, 25-22 and 25-19.
