GREENVILLE- Senior night is one of those dates on the sports calendar that every team refers to as a must win.

Wednesday, the Greenville Lady Wave golf team hosted Vandalia-Butler for a nine hole, GWOC contest.

Butler had destruction on its mind as the Aviators edged Greenville 216-218 at Turtle Creek.

"It was a tough loss and the girls were very upset," said Wave coach Tracey Haines. "The kids are blaming themselves for this loss and I've told them it's a team sport. I told them that they are one of four scores that count, but we learn from this and move on."

Led by senior Janelle Ange's 48, the low score was good enough to lead the Wave, but with two scores of 54 and a 62 behind that, Agne got little help from the rest of the team.

The North match with Butler left the Wave winless (according to the GWOC website) in the division and a 9-5 record overall.

"Tonight, we did not play up to our potential," said Haines. "I can't yell at them because they know they didn't play up to their capabilities. They all felt bad. I really don't know what else to say. They are upset with the loss and are upset with themselves. They all know they could have won tonight and they could have played better."

With the heat index in triple digits for the second day in a row, the heat could have been a factor in the team’s performance.

"I'm not making excuses, but it was hot out there and the kids were having to carry their bags," said Haines. "When it's that hot, and you're having to pack you bags around, that will take its toll on anyone. There were a lot of people out there watching them as well. When you factor all this in, they were hot, tired and nervous. I'm not trying to make excuses for them, but it happens."

With one more match left to play after Thursday, Haines is looking past the loss and toward the post season.

"If my girls play up to their potential, they can do well in the tournament," Haines admitted. "We just have to use our short term memory and dust this off and move on."

After playing at Beavercreek on Thursday, the Wave will finish the regular season at Miamisburg next Thursday before heading into the GWOC tournament to be played on Wednesday, September 25 at Beechwood in Arcanum. Tee time is set for 8:30 a.m.
