T'Bolts electrify Wave in soccer loss

GREENVILLE - It was a match that was described in two ways.

1. Hilarious.

2. Very sad.

In a 5-0 loss to Northmont Tuesday, Greenville coach Brent DeVoss actually referred to the game as a moral victory (if there is such a thing).

“We went up against the third best team in the in the southwest district,” said DeVoss. This was a moral victory because we had two goals we wanted to accomplish. We wanted to keep them at our under five goals and we did that. We wanted to score a goal against them and we came pretty close. So this was a moral victory for us.”

Greenville had several goo shots on goal but could never punch anything through.
“We had some good looks at the goal, said DeVoss. “we had some good chances.”
Even though the Wave gave up five goals on the night, DeVoss watched his goalie mature in a big way.

“AJ (Frens) is growing up so fast right before our eyes,” said DeVoss. “What a phenomenal job he did tonight. Our senior leadership with Ion Werner, Nathan Haviza and Aaron Wise  did a great job keeping us in the game and staying focused. It got a little chippy there at the end but we did what we came out to do. We’re getting there.”

The Bolts got the only goal they needed in the first half off the foot of Anthony Ewing at the 30:39 mark of the half.

Northmont got two more scores before the break, going up 3-0.

DeVoss watched a few things come together on offense.

“We had some set plays and breakaway plays this week and I saw one of our set pieces work to perfection tonight,” DeVoss said. “We had a couple that didn’t go quite our way but that’s the way it goes. Anytime you play against Northmont, you’re going to get a game. Tonight was very impressive for us. We went up against a school that can field three squads and we have a limited number of kids. We never backed down from them. This is D-I soccer. This is GWOC soccer.”

Oh yes, the hilarious part.

At one point in the first half, action was halted due to a young pup that decided it could help the Wave.

DeVoss was forced to use a slice of pizza to lure the animal off the playing field.

Greenville 0-4, will host Sidney Lehman Thursday with a starting time of 5:30.
