Lady Trojans win first round sectional
Arcanum to meet Dixie Tuesday
By George Starks

TIPP CITY- It wasn’t exactly the kind of offensive output that Arcanum coach Racheal Fearon wanted to see.

With no one in double figures Monday in the Trojans opening round sectional game against Brookville, the Trojans came away with a 49-31 victory.

Arcanum jumped out to a 15-6 first quarter lead as all guns seemed to be blazing for Arcanum.

“We came out in the first quarter and after that, we kind of let up,” said Fearon.

With Arcanum winning all four quarters, 13-11, 8-6 and 13-8, the offense was led by sophomore Abby Ross and senior Abby O’Donnell with nine points each to lead all in scoring.

“I felt like Abby Ross stepped up for us tonight on offense,” said Fearon. “She made a really good play on defense, keep a ball alive and then O’Donnell recovering it on the other end of the floor. That was a big play for us.”

With the offense sputtering to get on track, the defense was making the difference until the 5:58 mark of the second quarter when O’Donnell was forced to the bench with two personal fouls.

That allowed the Blue-Devils to make a little hay.

Trailing 18-8, Brookville took advantage of O’Donnell being on the bench, scoring the next six points and closing to a 18-14 count.

Fearon had seen enough and called for a 30 second time out.

“When she goes out, that takes away from our rebounding,” said Fearon. “I told them they all just needed to step it up. I told the girls coming off the bench to come in here and get it done. You can’t let up just because we’ve got a starter on the bench.”

Once play resumed, the Trojans started to come around once again.

Arcanum went on a 10-3 run to close out the half leading 28-17.

“I don’t like to call timeouts and have to get on them,” Fearon said. “Sometimes to have to do it and hope they will respond and this time, they did.”

In the third, it was Brittany Kinney that got the scoring in motion, hitting two big treys as Arcanum led at the third break, 36-23.

“Brittney’s been shooting the ball well for us the last couple of games,” admitted Fearon. “That was a big turn in our game.”

On the night, Arcanum went 12/18 from the foul line for 67 percent while the Blue Devils were 12/23 for a dismal 52 percent.

With the win, the Trojans (4 seed) will take on the 5 seeded Dixie Greyhounds next Tuesday at 7:30.

The two teams met earlier in the season with the Trojans coming out a 53-49 winner.

In the opening game of the night, it was the Preble Shawnee Lady Arrows dropping a 57-52 loss on Milton-Union.

Preble Shawnee will hook up with Versailles next Tuesday in a 6 pm. Start at Tipp City.

If both Arcanum and Versailles were to win in the second round, it would set up a county showdown between the Trojans and the Tigers on Thursday, February 20 at 7:30 for the sectional title.
