Versailles Boys Share the WOHSBC Title

With the Tiger bowlers knocking off undefeated Wapakoneta the previous week, a share of the title was in the hands of Versailles. It was likely that Wapak and St. Henry was going to win their last two matches. On the other hand, the Tigers had to face Coldwater and Ottawa-Glandorf, with Coldwater being the tougher of the two.

The advantage was with the Tigers as the match was being held at McBo’s Lanes in Versailles last Thursday. The match started out with Versailles winning 977-916. The Tigers continued to maintain their lead with a 1027-1003. The Baker games ended up 216-184, 174-169, 196-209, 189-205 and 169-205. The Tigers held on to win the match 2948 to 2893. “We had a decent handle on the match going into the Baker games. McBo’s Lanes showed their true colors tonight making it very difficult to string strikes in the Baker games. With 5 different guys on each team bowling, it made it difficult to string strikes. A few people bowled well if they had the correct axis rotation and tilt on their ball, however, most struggled with many, many single pins. Normally, I would have made a couple switches in the Baker games, but I just felt that nobody was going to roll a big game due to what I just explained,” said Coach Davidson. The Tigers were led by Dustin Ruhe 246-233, Michael Davidson 215-201 and Ryan Watren 211.

The next match was at Lima against Ottawa Glandorf on Saturrday. If Versailles wins, they would tie for the conference title with St. Henry and Wapakoneta. The match started out very close with Versailles edging OG by a score of 950-924. “OG came out striking early while we were still trying to figure out the lanes. I just came from helping Coach Phlipot coach the girls team on to victory against Coldwater and those lanes were extremely dry. It took me about 4-5 frames to get them tuned in to help the guys,” said Davidson.

Once everyone got a feel for the lanes and the line for OG went away, the Tigers took control winning the 2nd game 1032 to 750. The Baker games went well and anchor, Michael Davidson, gave way to the other two seniors the last two Baker games to roll in the anchor position. Davidson left a 2-10 split as lead off in the 4th game. “I told him you are a better anchor than a leadoff. No comment was made by Michael to me and he went up and proceeded to make the split. He turned around, gave just me a nod and a smile. I had to eat some crow on that one,” said Davidson. “ The 3 Seniors, Michael, Ben Ahrens and Ryan will all be missed and it has been a pleasure coaching all of them. I cannot say enough about how hard these guys have worked. The Tigers were led by Michael with a 267, Zach Marshal 228, Dustin Ruhe 228 and Ben Ahrens 209-202.
