By George Starks

Travis Feitshans and Abbey O’Donnell were selected for the 2014 scholarships given by Dave Knapp Ford through the Senior Scribes Scholarship Fund. The presentations were made by Kristina Knapp, Dave Knapp Ford marketing director.

Fietshans played in four sports in his high school career: basketball, track, golf and one year of baseball.

During his basketball career, Fietshans scored 1051 points, grabbed 711 rebounds and had 261 assists. He averaged 14.1 points per game, 7.9 rebounds a game and 2.9 assists per game. In Golf he was a 4-year letter winner, 4-year all CCC and 4-year district qualifier. Feitshans won the Coaches Award all 4 years, averaging 40 strokes per nine holes. He shot 80 as a senior in district action at Weatherwax, missing state by only one stroke. In track, he threw 124'7" in the discus, 42'4" in shot and 5’4” in the high jump. Feitshans was a varsity letter winner in baseball.

O'Donnell was a three sport athlete: basketball, volleyball and track.

In basketball, O'Donnell played in 88 games in her career and averaged 10.6 points per game, scoring 931 points in her three years as a varsity player. She had 722 rebounds (8.2 avg.), 121 assists (1.4 avg.) and 131 steals (1.5 avg.). In volleyball, she had 809 serves with an 87 percent rate of serves in play and 124 career aces. O’Donnell set a school record for aces in 2012 with 49 and recorded 541 kills with 220 coming in her senior year. In her three years at the varsity level she had 129 blocks with 98 of them being kept in play. O'Donnell played in 235 sets in her three years. In track, she threw the shot put and discus.

Fietshans and O’Donnell were thankful to SSSF for providing this opportunity, but especially to Knapp for sponsoring the athletic scholarships.

"The kids are the future and this sends a message to them. It inspires them to do their best and strive to be the best they can be, because hard work pays off in the end,” Fietshans said. “I have seen the younger kids at FM that I work with and they look up to the high school athletes. We don't think about it but we are role models for the younger kids at the schools. We are the ones setting the examples for them. They are our future. Mr. Knapp sets a great example because he helps others.”

“Many if the younger kids that I work with see the scholarships that I've gotten and ask me how it happens that you get this money for school,” O’Donnell noted. “I tell them it's all about hard work. When people see that you work hard and you excel at what you do, they will reward you for it.”

"I want to say thank you to Dave Knapp. Bluffton is like a private college so everything is appreciated,” O’Donnell added. “This helps me focus on the money I need to buy my books. It helps take the worry out of a lot of things now."

"We are very fortunate to get this scholarship money and Mr. Knapp very generous and visible in the community. He gives so much back to the community not only today but during the fair,” Fietshans added. “He buys 4-H farm animals and sponsors a lot of the horse races. I think he's just a great man. He helps take a lot of the pressure off us with the scholarships donation to the Senior Scribes at the website (County News Online). When it comes to the kids and the community, it's not about him, it's about us

"I think that he's an inspiration and we need to learn because he's a great example of the way people should be," O’Donnell said.

The Senior Scribes Scholarship Fund has provided over $40,000 in scholarships since its inception in 2009, with $27,400 of it coming from County News Online sponsors and donors. County News Online began serving the community as an SSSF fundraising arm in 2011.

Dave Knapp has been a CNO business sponsor since 2012, helping six students achieve their college goals.
