Fearon gearing up for new season
Arcanum looking to improve

ARCANUM- The first scrimmage of the new season revealed many things to Arcanum coach Rachel Fearon.

As with all first scrimmages, a coach will see the good, the bad and the ugly and Fearon talked about it all.

“I think we did a really nice job getting the ball up the floor tonight,” said Fearon after the Trojans scrimmage with Greenville and St. Henry. “That’s definitely a positive of our game. The girls are in shape and I asked them who could play two more quarters and they all raised their hands. That is a positive for me. With our numbers being down, that is a plus for us.”

Then, there was the rest of the story…the bad and the ugly.

“The bad and the ugly starts with injuries and communication,” admitted Fearon. “I have communication problems because we are young. We have experience but we are still young. When our communication lets down, our defense lets down and we’ve got to change that.”

Taking nothing for granted, Fearon has four returning letter winners back from a year ago and with the loss of Abby O’Donnell to graduation, Fearon will look to her sophomores and juniors to lead the way. With Shelby Howard out for the season due to shoulder surgery and Brittney McKinney down with an injury that should not keep her out long, Fearon looks to be very competitive.

With the spring, summer and fall over with, the Arcanum Lady Trojans has had several months to reflect on some things that happened a year ago. Namely, a loss to Versailles in the district title game at Tipp City.

In that loss to Versailles, Fearon knows it all boiled down to the final 1:40 of the game.

With the 2014-15 edition of the Lady Trojans, Fearon likes her chances in that same 1:40.

“I really think that because we are a year older, it could make a difference in the outcome of that game,” Fearon stated. “I think we go deeper even though the numbers aren’t there because my sophomores have that year of experience at the varsity level. I think that year of experience would make a difference.”

Arcanum will open the season at Tri-Village in the annual Bill Burkett Tournament on November 28.
