Ball handling key for Greenville girls
Kerns back at the helm

ARCANUM- Rachel Kerns is once again at the helm in Greenville, leading the way for the Lady Wave basketball team.

Tuesday, the Wave took part in a three way scrimmage as the former Wave standout will lead the young Wave into battle during the upcoming season.

With Arcanum and Ft. Loramie providing the competition, Kerns soon found out what issues needed to be addressed.

While the offense struggled at times, the defense had its ups and downs.

“Defense is something we’ve not really discussed much in practice,” said Kerns. “We have a lot to do for the foundation of this team and we’re going to hit the defense a lot harder in practice this week.

With a new coach and a young team, growing pains are huge and it’s no different with the Wave.

“We have 100 percent of growing pains and they hurt,” Kerns admitted. “At times tonight, I though we were competitive but we had too many turnovers. If we don’t turn the ball over, then we will give ourselves a chance to win games. When we weren’t turning the ball over, we were very competitive. In the quarters that we weren’t competitive, we had nine or ten turnovers in the quarter. Right now, that is our biggest focus. Not turning the ball over.”

With turnovers being the focal point for Kerns as well as defense, there were things the coach did like.

“The girls are getting the concept of the game and they are getting the concept of what we’re trying to get them to do,” said Kerns. “Their spacing on the floor is not terrible and they’re running down the floor pretty well. At times, we didn’t turn the ball over and at times it was our worse enemy.”

Kerns summed up the pre-season in very short terms.

“It’s a journey,” said Kerns. “Every day is a new journey.”

With the season looming near and opening night being November 28 with the Annie Oakley Shootout, the Wave will host a scrimmage Friday with Bethel and St. Henry starting at 6 pm.
