Program Friday Night Will Set Stage for Saturday’s Most Famous Late
Model Race
ROSSBURG, OH (Sept. 4) – They have each hoisted the famed globed World
100 trophy in the air before, and after Thursday’s thrilling twin
25-lap feature events to kick off the 44th annual running of the event
at Eldora Speedway, Dale McDowell and Jimmy Owens have shown they are
in the hunt to do it again. Each had their own style as
they prevailed as feature winners over a 117-car field.
Earlier this year McDowell, captured $100,000 in Eldora’s Dirt Late
Model Dream by running strong on the low side. He admitted
in victory lane that Eldora’s marquee events are traditionally won by
running high, up against the wall; however, he just didn’t think he
could run there and was thankful to pull off the win as he did from the
low-side.
That changed Thursday as he amped up his strategy and took to the high
groove. It paid off well.
After the green flag fell, McDowell shot into the lead, with Gregg
Satterlee, Jimmy Mars and Brad Neat in tow.
With no caution flags to slow the pace, everyone had to be on their
game plan. Randy Weaver was the first to show his strength
as he marched from 7th on the first lap to runner-up on lap
nine. As he placed McDowell in his sight, another for
World 100 winner, Brian Birkhofer, was on the move as well.
After starting 12th on the grid, Birkhofer began picking cars off just
past the half-way point, but ran out of laps in his
pursuit. Weaver held on for second behind McDowell, while
Satterlee crossed the line third with Birkhofer all the way up to
fourth. Mars completed the top five.
Jeff Babcock had hopes of repeating McDowell’s run from the outside
pole starting position when the second of the night’s two 25-lap
finales rolled on to the track. He appeared to be
getting the job done as he led the first six tours before giving way to
Chris Madden .
One lap later, Tim McCreadie got by Babcock as well to position
himself behind Madden on the track. Meanwhile, Owens was on
the move.
After starting 14th, he steadily picked cars off. By lap five he
was up to 7th and five laps later was up to fourth; behind Madden,
McCreadie and Kent Robinson.
On lap 12 he got by Robinson for third and only two more laps were
required before picking off McCreadie for second.
With ten laps left in the chase, Owens powered into the lead he was to
hold through the checkered flag. In the latter stages,
Robinson and McCreadie were able to get my Madden as well and that
foursome finished in that order behind Owens.
Another complete program of twelve heat races, four B-Features and a
pair of 25-lap World 100 tune-up features are on the card for Friday
night; leading up to Saturday’s annual chase for the coveted globe
trophy and World 100 bragging rights for the year.
