Bees no match for Franklin Monroe

PITSBURG - “Life is good; soccer makes it better.”

Those were the words of Franklin Monroe soccer coach Danny Diceanu Thursday after his Jets rolled to a convincing 5-1 victory over Bethel.

Now 5-0-2 overall and 4-0 in the Cross County Conference, the Jets are in control of the conference title, having posted a 4-1 win over Newton and now a win over Bethel.

It didn’t take long for the Jets to get on the board as sophomore Jacob Shellabarger found the back of the goal at the 37:30 mark of the opening half.

With only 2:30 into the game, Diceanu was concerned with the play of his team at the half.

The goal by Shellabarger was the only score of the opening 40 minutes.

“I think we created a lot of good chances,” said the Jet coach. “”After we scored that goal so early, I though they actually outplayed us in the first half. Sometimes scoring early sets the tone of the game, but not in the right way. Sometimes it makes you relax and I thought after that goal they took it to us a little bit.”

Bethel had its chances, but the biggest was an open shot midway through the half that sailed over the goal, missing the mark by at least 10 yards.

“We dodged a big bullet on that shot,” said Diceanu. “I think Mathew (Poe) did a nice job in goal on their free kicks. Every free kick was in the crossbar range and he did a nice job clearing it. So that was a big part of our success.”

With a 1-0 lead at the break, Diceanu re-grouped the troops.

“I told them I thought Bethel was out-hustling us,” said Diceanu. “I told them we had to get back to playing our game, and not their game and their style. I thought we did that in the second half, even though we came out and scored a fairly early goal.”

With just 1:11 having elapsed of the second half clock, senior Brian Robison put the Jets up 2-0.

Carlos Anzardi got the Bees on the board on a kick that caught Poe leaning to his left as the ball went right at straight over the goal with 33:44 left in the game.

With 30:19 remaining in the game, sophomore Dallas Arnett scored ,and 22 seconds later Robison connected, leaving the Jets up by a 4-1 count.

Junior Britt Bolin put the final touches on the game at the 13:59 mark and a 5-1 lead.

“I think they got a lucky bounce when one of my guys tried to clear it on that short corner, and they put it in the back of the net,” said Diceanu. “Give their guys credit for being in the right place at the right time. Then we started opening up the game and doing some things in the second half that we weren’t doing in the first half.”

With only two more conference games left on the schedule (Tri-County North and Twin Valley South), the Jets are in control of their own destiny.

Franklin Monroe will play at Greenview today in a 3 pm start.
