Lebanon too much for young Wave team

GREENVILLE- Like so many coaches, Greenville soccer coach Brent DeVoss would probably like to play only the second half of his boys soccer games.

The Wave fell to 1-7 on the year Tuesday, falling to the Lebanon Warriors 6-0, in a GWOC crossover game at Harmon Field.

Greenville gave up five first half scores, three in less than 10 minutes.

Lake many times before, the Wave played a superior second 40 minutes, allowing only one goal. That one coming with 12:27 remaining in the game.

“We made a lot of adjustments in the second half,” said DeVoss. “Actually, we split the halves, 15 shots in the first half and 15 in the second. Of the 15 first half shots, 13 were inside the 18 yard line and in the second half, only four were inside the 18 so that was a great adjustment we made with our defense once we pushed them out.”

“Depsite losing 6-0, DeVoss seen a positive.

We took a big hit at the hands of Wayne the night, 7-0 and Lebanon only beat them, 3-1,” said DeVoss. “I feel we held our own by knocking it down by one goal. Each week, we look to get a little better and tonight I feel we did that against a quality team.”

Midway through the first half, DeVoss pulled six of his starters for a little coaching time by the bench.

“You see something not going your way, maybe a little lethargic there at the back, you pull them out,” said DeVoss. “You re-coach them, maybe re-adjust them and let the subs in there. Get the first Wave back in and get them focused. I’ve had a full team at practice maybe four times this year and that’s where it has to start. We had a long weekend and many were out of town because of the holiday. We had seven at practice Friday and a game on Saturday and here we are playing a game today. So are we ready to play mentally…No! Were we ready to play physically...No! We played with a lot of heart. I have 12 core players and every week they’re digging for me.”

Greenville will host Celina Saturday starting at 10 am.

“Now we have a full squad back in practice and I’m looking to kick things off right on Saturday and get a win against Celina,” DeVoss said in conclusion.
