Abner leads Arcanum in CCC victory over Ansonia

ANSONIA- It’s a well-known fact that one person doesn’t make a team.

Then again, it’s also known that one person can make a huge difference in a team.

Hence Arcanum junior, Alexis Abner.

On a night when the only thing that went wrong for Abner was the fact she struggled at the foul line (5/9), Abner pumped in 28 points and yanked down 10 rebounds with seven coming on the offensive glass.

When the final buzzer had sounded, it was the Lady Trojans pulling out a 68-44 Cross County Conference victory Thursday over Ansonia.

“She tough, I mean 28 points is great,” said Arcanum coach Rachel Fearon. “We even had a lot of shots that didn’t fall for us tonight and for us to still shoot the ball like that, I guess that says a lot for us as a team. We were working hard and coming through on the offensive end.”

It was the second time this season that the two teams had met with the outcome being the same.

In November, in the Burkett Tournament held at Tri-Village, the Trojans dropped a 73-51 loss on the Tigers in the opening game of the two day ordeal.

Right from the opening tip to the final buzzer, the Trojans had one speed all night and that was…GO!

It was also a night when the bench loomed large for Fearon.

“We had a lot left in the tank tonight and with the tournament coming, it’s big for us to have our bench come through,” said Fearon. “Those junior varsity girls have been playing five quarters a lot this year and it’s been a huge difference in their improvement throughout the season.”

When the end of the first quarter ended, the Trojans held a slim 16-11 lead as Ansonia was able to pick up an easy deuce by junior Brooke Neal off a steal at the buzzer.

After that, it was all Arcanum.

The Trojans tacked on 16 more in the second eight minutes while allowing only 11 points on average in the second, third and fourth quarters.

At the break, Abner had netted 13 of Arcanum’s 32 and with three quarters in the books, she had poured in 24 of the Trojans 49 as Arcanum was well in control, 49-36.

With the second season looming large, the victory was the second straight for the Trojans.

On Tuesday, Arcanum topped Bradford, 52-32, giving the Trojans some much needed momentum as the sectional draw happen Sunday.

“We have a young squad this year,” said Fearon. “It’s very important to us to have some momentum going into the second season. I think it’s taken us this long in our season to build the confidence we need. The tournament is what we call our next season. We’ve broken it into two seasons this year and that’s what we’re shooting for is to build that confidence for the tournament going into the next season.”

In addition to the 28 from Abner, sophomore Stevie Johnting added 12 in support.

Sophomore Jaylin Thwaits netted 16 for Ansonia with Neal adding 13 of her own.

Now 8-9 on the season and 5-5 in the CCC, Arcanum will host Lehman Catholic today while Ansonia will be at Parkway starting at 1 pm.
